I went in with my friends as I had asked one of them what his recommendations were for Chinese cuisine around the area. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised by the decor and general air of the place.
Before coming, I had checked their online menu and had a general idea of the pricing involved. Unfortunately, when I sat down with my friends, I found out not only that the pots of tea were not only priced per person but also on refill, which is certainly not the norm for most Yum Cha or similar dine-in restaurants of this sort, but also that there was a minimum charge per person. Certainly, 30 dollars per person was not a large amount, but it was more than we had walked in thinking we would be paying.
Furthering that, everything on the menu was about 20% more expensive than had been written online. I presume this is because they have not yet updated their online menu, which seems a bit lazy considering that they had made such a large % of difference in their pricing. Lemon chicken, most specifically, was 30 dollars for about one person's worth of food, and listed as 24 dollars on the online menu.
Finally, the receipt came and I was surprised to see that they had not only had they managed to mistakenly add alcohol which we had not ordered, but also charged multiple times for tea after we had simply not requested another. After informing them of the issues and having them rectify them, I paid and left -- I will not...
Read moreIf ever there was a restaurant in Camberwell that fully deserves its iconic status, the Tea House on Burke is that restaurant. Shannon and his team deliver flawless cuisine and service, just as they have done for decades. The Tea House works as well for an occasion as it does as a local regular haunt, as I have done seemingly forever. It's totally impossible for me to select a favourite or a house speciality from its very extensive menu of Cantonese and other popular Asian dishes. Its wine list is thoughtful, substantial and very fairly priced - with wines you can actually recognise. The Tea House also has a very generous BYO philosophy and regularly entertains the wine and food community. So, if you enjoy a friendly welcome, a touch of style, consistent and spotless cuisine, think about booking in next time you're keen to get out. Just don't miss the Peking duck....
Read moreI’ve been coming to THOB for over 15 years. First with friends for lunch when we worked locally in real estate, to now after living interstate and overseas for 10 plus years, it was a place we loved to go to. After being back in Melbourne for two years, I have to say we initially loved eating here but our last two in house dining experiences weren’t great. Both times, our immediate family plus aunts and uncles, grandma and friends felt the change. We felt pressured and rushed to order (a mid week siting at 6pm with kids) so not busy, severs that couldn’t understand what we were saying, trying to clear the table before we had fully finished and overall, not friendly servers. Their normally great food was hit and miss. We won’t return and feel that the staff couldn’t care less. Nor did they care to ask or...
