Overall score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What you should order: fried quail eggs, red duck curry, pineapple fried rice • Review: The Thai restaurant scene is highly competitive in Melbourne, but it’s really nice to know that there is an above average option at QV.
We were very enraptured with the ambience that Thai town has created, and that elevated our experience here. We were also not rushed to finish our meals! I would see myself coming back with a group of friends just to enjoy the ambience, cocktails and Thai desserts!
Some highlights from our meal: ⏰Food came so quickly! Like 3 minutes and boom! Everything is here! 🍳Love the deep fried quail eggs - not good for one’s cholesterol, but really crunchy and delicious 🍗The grilled pork neck was a bit tough but one cannot fault the flavour - it was tasty even without the accompanying sauce 🍍Pineapple fried rice mixed a bit of curry seasoning with turmeric - my favourite fried rice option! Plenty of cashew nuts, chicken and prawn but I didn’t find much pineapple chunks in it. 🥗The papaya salad was not bad too - full of peanuts and actual chilli (be prepared for the spice!) 🥘Loved the red duck curry - duck was perfectly tender, although curry could have been more potent. 🍡We loved that Thai town sold dessert separately from its restaurant operations, which means you can takeaway dessert without dining at the restaurant! The fried banana was crunchy but used they did not use optimally ripe bananas which are more gooey and perfect for frying. The fried crepe with coconut milk was so delicious - good combo of marshmallow-like texture with crispy crepe.
This elaborate meal cost us $30-40pp which wasn’t cheap but we really ordered over and above usual amounts. Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Price:...
Read moreA spacious and bustling restaurant, Thai Town does indeed evoke a certain feel that one gets when dining in Thailand. The extensive menu means that you will have lots of fun exploring all the dishes on offer, and showcases a few dishes that is not commonly found in Melbourne. For the sweet tooth, there is a dedicated dessert section with cook to order desserts or pre-packed desserts from well-known Thai suppliers in Melbourne.
Dining in a big group is a must here so that you can enjoy the menu to the fullest. The flavours are as authentic as you can get but obviously leeway has to be given since you’re not actually dining in Thailand. However, what is undeniable is the amazing flavours. Each of the dishes that we tried was bursting with flavours – bold, punchy and in your face.
A Thai friend of mine did the ordering for us, and as such I was in luck as she ordered the most wonderful combination of dishes. The soft shell crab curry was a memorable dish, both in terms of taste and texture. The jumbo king prawn pad thai is not to be missed – beautiful depth of flavours, and paired with juicy king prawns. The salmon sashimi with spicy chilli fish sauce was an unexpected hit with its bright and tangy flavour. If you love drinking your meal, then you must try the tom yum. Piquant and rich, I can guarantee that there will be no broth leftover.
The drinks list is just as extensive as the food, and the cocktails are delicious creations, albeit on the sweeter side. Definitely save room for the desserts as those are the...
Read moreAuthentic & yummy Thai food in Melbourne CBD that was easy to get to. In fact, went back twice in the course of a few nights.
They welcome walk-ins and have a very clear queuing system. Order via QR code which there is an option to pay by cash at the counter after the meal. In fact, they give a slight discount when paying by cash. Just like a number of other restaurants, they do have a Sunday surcharge.
Both visits, the staff were consistently very pleasant and I personally felt was good service. Food was consistently good even though they can get pretty packed. My favourite was the crab meat fried rice and had it twice. By far, it is my favourite amongst the different Thai restaurants I have tried in Sydney and Melbourne. My version of perfectly fried rice with the breath of wok and generous amounts of crab meat. The next on my favourite list was the hot and sour pork soup. Very flavoursome rich broth and tender meat.
Noodles were on the sweeter side but still well stir fried with the breath of wok. Similarly, the pork skewers too were on the sweeter side. May be to the palate for others as my dinner companions enjoyed them with Pad Thai as the winner. The basil pork unfortunately was pretty salty and needs plain rice to complement it, which we couldn't have more rice with what we ordered.
Overall, good food but does leave me wishing for larger portions especially for their fried rice. And ideally too, not requiring me to leave my personal details to...
