I have always loved going to the Austral cafe until my recent visit there where I ordered a chocolate malted and a toasted egg and lettuce sandwich now normally when I order this particular sandwich at other cafes they toast the bread first and then add the egg and lettuce after, however at the Austral Cafe they toasted it all together so the lettuce was literally cooked and of course was soggy and less than tasty my malted milk turned out to be a thick shake though that wasn't so bad, add to this a less then friendly staff member I can tell you that I was very disappointed and would normally have said something only I'd just come from a sad occasion and was feeling somewhat fragile and not up to saying anything I'm not sure if I ever want to go back to this cafe again. I work in a role where customer service is top priority and I'm afraid that in this case it was...

This is a really cool old fashioned cafe called, The Austral. It has old style booths, old style cafe food, great coffee and best of all old style service. I remember going to the cafe in Bourke with my grandfather when I was a kid and they’d bring the sandwiches out in a plate cut into triangles, and the hamburgers were so big you couldn’t get them in your mouth, the chips were so crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, the milkshakes were served in a milk shake glass or old fashioned silver milk shake container. They do all this at this cafe, and one of the nicest things was that there was an old bloke there named Colin, who must eat there regularly because every single staff member knew him by name and stopped to have a chat with him. How good would it be if we could bottle that kind of atmosphere and...

This place is an institution in M'bah It's an old-fashioned cafe and bakery and that's a magic combination. Great service, good prices and love the blue vinyl soft seats with yellow laminex tables. They have just about every milk bar item you can think of but I had a custard tart and a caramel malted (yes they even have malt) that was served with the classic glass and the stainless steel container. Great old photos of M'bah (flood, fire but no famine). And there is a new clock! Classic cafe.

Awesome traditional diner and bakery. The cakes were beautiful and fresh. From the outside, I thought this may be a cafe with just a few standard cakes/pastries, but inside there was a really good variety, more like a bakery. Also had a grilled sandwich and milkshake, both were perfect. The milkshake was very generous. Atmosphere was nice, and most of the tables taken. Pick a table, order at the counter, and fine to have a light, solo meal. Definitely on my return-to list.
