The Modern Grocer — Restaurant in Murwillumbah

My husband and I visited here for lunch today, Saturday 9th August 2025. The guy at the counter, tall with dark hair was great but then it went downhill from there. The waitress delivered my chai tea and spilled some on the table so rested the pot on top. The TWO sweetcorn fritters with chutney and poached egg were delivered on a massive plate and pushed to the top so there was a huge empty space with no food. Leafy greens were haphazardly thrown on top with no nice sauce or oil. I presume it was the owner that walked past and looked at us strangely and asked if everything was ok. I replied yes, my husband didn’t reply because he wasn’t impressed. My husband had to wait for a long time to get his halloumi, egg and avocado on sourdough. The halloumi was one tiny little piece! When he went up to the counter to enquire where his meal was, the woman (owner?) snapped back and said “I asked your wife if everything was ok? To which my husband replied, I never answered you. Can you find out how long my meal will be? No happy whatsoever. We also noticed that the power cords going to the lights in the kitchen area were covered in very old dark cobwebs and dust. The whole cafe needs a makeover! Not everyone likes to see boxes of supplies sitting out in the open, and having to share a massive table with people you don’t know because there are no smaller tables. This cafe could be so cool if a little effort with creativity, paint, decor etc were put into this shop and without the attitude from the owner! We...

Absolutely repulsed. Dined in here this morning and watched one of the young staff members behind the counter preparing food, wipe his nose with his hand more than 10 times and the continue on handling everyone’s food. If you are going to have open kitchen make sure that your staff are aware of safe and clean hygiene practices. I actually feel physically sick to my stomach after eating here and watching what occurred. The cutlery that was also brought out was filthy and had to be sent back. Several tables ordered after us but got their food before us. It was breakfast. Corn zucchini fritters ( displayed) with avo bacon and Haloumi. Not complex. Dish came and was awful very little food on plate. One decent fritter one underneath was considerably different not much corn or zucchini in them.. was Mother’s Day so very very disappointing. When I enquired why it was taking so long I received a very rude response.. no apology for the delay.. would not recommend this...
