Nelson Bay Bowling & Recreation Club — Restaurant in Nelson Bay

Went for dinner tonight and was neither hungry nor expecting much. The food was so good! We had the surf and turf, the cashew crumbed chicken, mussels marinara for dinner, and then kahlua tiramisu and sticky date pudding for dessert. The surf and turf was a perfect medium rare eye fillet! Topped with prawns and scallops and a bearnaise sauce rested on perfectly cooked vegetables. The cashew crumbed chicken was the house schnitzel, it came with the vegetables and it was so tasty, crispy outside and moist inside. The mussels marinara was really my favourite. The sauce was top quality, like the chef grew up eating the food and knew the right method to make a simple thing taste amazing. There were fresh mussels in abundance on my plate with such a morish texture and taste. The kahlua tiramisu was pretty good. I prefer my tiramisu to be dripping with coffee and booze but I understand I'm mostly alone there. The delicious sticky date with butterscotch sauce is a standard at most restaurants and this place set and achieved a high standard. The service was straight up club service. Friendly, genuine, and nothing over the top. Seemed a bit standoffish at first but they warmed up and we had a few nice conversations with the staff throughout the evening including the chef and kitchen staff to say thank you. The drinks selection upstairs wasn't anything to write home about, just a few standard beers and premixed drinks and a small list of wines. Nothing spesh there. Order and pay at the counter. TOTAL RIP OFF! $40 for catch of the day which consists of a pre frozen cut of over cooked (which is an understatement) salmon. If i dropped it no the floor it would have bounced its way back to the kitchen. I stated the fact to staff, that you can not sell frozen over cooked salmon for $40. They first denied, then supervisor came over and said they didn't freeze it. I worked in a salmon factory when I was young and pointed out that maybe you didn't freeze it, but you have been supplied it frozen, to which she agreed and tried to fob us off with dessert. I asked for partial refund.

She came back 15 mins later and dropped $10 off and stormed off without saying anything. The fish was uneatable, that means I paid $30 for some chips. We did not have time for them to try and cook another frozen piece of fish and charge us the same price as we needed to get our toddler to bed.

I will not even go on about the seafood pasta which agaat $34 was well over priced, for the quality. We dined at other restaurants, which had similar dishes. Please just go into town where you can get much better, fresh quality food at the same price and much better customer service.

There is no need to charge the prices they do for the quality of food they serve.

Last night of our holidays and we decided to go to Nelson Bay Bowling & Recreation Club for dinner. The restaurant is called Marlins on the Bay. We walked in the front door and the lady doing reception was very helpful. Explained the restaurant was upstairs just to the left or there is an elevator further down. It was actually very busy there tonight. A table of about 10 a lots of tables of 4 or 6 people and more tables of 2. The girl taking the food orders was very busy but very competent and so friendly . My partner had the Gilled salmon fillet $31.50 And I had the Salt & Pepper Calamari $25.90 They do have specials as well, tonight was $5 off steak. Also about where you order they have more specials. We also had dessert which was also on special Chocolate Mudcake with cream or ice cream $8 Sarah the young bartender was doing a fabulous job, such a lovely friendly young girl. Beautiful view from the upstairs restaurant , I did notice that you could reserve a table close to the big window to get that great view. The restaurant is quite big and you are not squeezed in close to everyone. Again as we walked out we spoke to a couple more staff who spoke to us and asked if we enjoyed ourselves.
