“Bún chả Hanoi” has been internationally famous since President Barack Obama and Anthony Bourdain ate it during the president visit Hanoi in May 2016. However, for local Hanoians this dish has been one of the most popular street food. Prepare by freshly ground pork mince meat balls and pork belly slices, grilled on charcoal in fish sauce and pickle carrots, radish, served together with rice noodle, fresh lettuce and herbs. In winter time the sauce is served luke warm, however, during summer it’s served in room temperature. The taste of the fresh meat (mixed with herbs) grilled, the sour the pickle blended in the unique fish sauce complement each other in your mouth. Tram and her husband Ian, the owners, have turned this place into one of our weekly must visits. Ian is always welcoming and loves chatting with customers, making everyone feel right at home. Tram, who usually runs the kitchen, crafts the most authentic pho I’ve tasted.
I’ve tried other pho places around, but nothing beats the clean, flavorful broth they serve here. Their lunch deals are unbeatable, too. The pork rolls are packed with flavor and so filling. Having What the Pho close to home is such a treat.
