I cannot stress enough that this is the greatest place I have eaten at in Newcastle in the last 3 years I have lived here. A hidden gem tucked up next to the Egyptian restaurant on Beaumont street Kimchi house of Korea (Traditional Korean BBQ) is not only filled with incredible servers who are upbeat, caring and passionate but had food and atmosphere to match! To start the location is fantastic, for somewhere so close to the main drag of Hamilton, even with open doors, there was no noise from the street that penetrated through to the indoor dining. The view however was marvellous and you can fully enjoy the sights of a busy Saturday night on the main stretch. To follow this the service was impeccable from any standard, with quick polite and compassionate service the night felt fantastic and flowed smoothly throughout. Finally and most importantly the food; Me and my partner ordered the cooked at table BBQ mix plater, we asked if it would be enough for two to find it would easily fill 3 ravenous bellies and 4 looking for great food with a standard appetite. Sides were as to be expected of Korean BBQ, unlimited. Then came the highlight of the night, normally I’m used to cooking my own Korean BBQ as this is the standard throughout higher end places within Sydney, we were in for a treat however. The food is cooked for you at the table and not only that but different variations of how to consume the various high end cuts are proposed to the customer. I have never had this experience and can truly say that Korean BBQ will never be the same again, the different styles and ways to eat the meal taught to me made me truly feel as if I had learnt to eat this phenomenal cuisine for the first time all over again, this time better than the first time!! The conversation with the owner (who cooked the meal for us at the table) was sweet lighthearted and entertaining. From stories of home and life to hardship and struggle, a connection was made. Not everyone may like this and I’m more than certain he would cater to how people respond and adapt the topic and degree of conversation. But at this restaurant you will not only fall in love with the food but you will form a connection to the establishment in a way only great atmosphere, people and food can create. I cannot stress enough that this is the best Korean BBQ I have ever been to and cannot recommend it enough!!!!!
PS. Note that it may be difficult to locate, at the cold rock ice creamery walk into the alley and up the stairs on the left hand side. This will take you to the absolute gem that is Kimchi...
Read moreOut of all of the endless restaurants on Beaumont Street, our hungry eyes were set on Kimchi House of Korea looking out on the convivial pedestrians below. The festivities were no less in the restaurant, we came on a Saturday night only to find out the place was booked out. Despite our lack of forethought to make a booking, the compassionate and welcoming owner still managed to get us a table. It was absolutely busy yet the service was prompt, accommodating and impartial all the way through. The seafood and scallion pancake arrived first with a huge emphasis on the 'scallion'. Not one bite was missing the crunchy strips and the unmistakable, sweet scent. The fishiness of the mussels and prawns helped with balancing the potency of the scallions. What harmoniously binded it together was the batter, a light and fluffy vessel for intense flavours. Following on, the beef bulgogi and BBQ chicken was served sizzling hot alongside rice and banchan. The BBQ chicken was cooked tender in a luscious sweet soy glaze similar to teriyaki, its aromatic charm evident in the accompanying medley of onions, cabbage and carrots. But more tantalising was the bulgogi, the sugary sauce hand intermingled with the meaty juices of the beef to form peak deliciousness. In between these indulgent bites, the sour and spicy kimchi was great to reset the taste buds. The delicate sides of pickled bean sprouts and braised potato were very nice too, especially the pickled yellow radish with its refreshing tartness. The rice was boiled exceptionally well in retaining its chewy texture and sopping up the delectable sauces of the meats. For my first time eating at a Korean restaurant, I was introduced to the valuable, open-arms hospitality and vibrancy of the culture. The owner was even apologetic that our group had to eat at a small table but we were plenty full with a tasty, delightful dining experience. If anything, I would apologise for not knowing earlier about Korean cuisine and immediately booking...
