Me & my boss was on a road trip from Sydney to Sun Shine Coast on a week day. We started late due to previous engagement so we decided to take it easy & stop over in New Castle. It was the 1st time we stay in this hotel & most likely be the last. 1st Red Flag - Street parking is always full (may be unless after 10 pm) & there's no sign directing us where to park our car. There's even not a sign telling us where to check in with our bags. This would be fine for a pub or eatery but not good management for accommodation. (Just FYI, you could park in the "community parking" on James St. & you should check in thru the bottle shop). 2nd Red Flag - we've checked in around 7 pm so we're under time pressure to decide where to dinner before they close down. Only to find that our room have NOT been clean after the previous occupant. (My best guess was ... it has to be a late checkout so the cleaner must had already left. But seemingly the management had no knowledge about it & happily offered it to the next customer. The management earned a subpar ranking at the best right here for the kinda price they charge). They immediately offer another room with apology & upgraded to a room for 3 people (may be merely becoz they don't have another room for 2 available at the time). & it took them 15 minutes just to come up with an electronic key that works so we could leave our room. Anyway, they've earned one star back right here on my books. 3rd Red Flag - One of the reasons why we booked this hotel was becoz they've a eatery under the same roof. & they've a menu of their eatery in the room. The price implied it must be "fine dinning" (or "highway robbery", if otherwise). Since we're a bit too tired for fine dinning anyway so we decided to take our chance elsewhere (& luckily landed on a gem, which is another story). 4th Red Flag - As shown as the photo attached (I hope the resolution of my phone do them justice) ... both of their pillow cases & all the bedding should be white. We found that they're in 3 difference tones of white. So how clean they're ... ? Your guess is as good as mine. Luckily my boss insisted of bringing our own pillow cases & bed sheet on this road trip (i.e. those with strips on top of the photo). In conclusion, I've been worse ... so I think 3 stars ranking would be fair to all parties concerned. Would I stay here again ... no. I would take my chances elsewhere next time I'm...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at The Northern Star while visiting family. The room itself was pleasant, the check out time is 10am for this establishment, at 9.20am the next room occupant with keys supplied to him by John, a hotel staff member, entered our room whilst I was getting dressed ready to check out. We had not checked out and had until 10am to do so and were still in possession of keys issued to us for the room, housekeeping lady hadn't arrived to start her day or to service the room for the next occupant. We were told strictly 2pm check in when booking the room. Staff encountered during our stay were rude, unprofessional and need replacing with staff that are going to do their job without it being an inconvenience to them. We encountered the owner a couple of times during our stay and she seemed nice and was keen for us to rebook for a future stay we asked her about the first day we were there, though when we inquired about it were brushed off and told to check back in a month's time, after our check out morning encounter and treatment we have since booked elsewhere. The housekeeping lady also seemed nice and took pride in her job. While we wouldn't recommend staying at The Northern Star, we would however recommend going to this establishment for a meal as the meal we had there was very enjoyable, all be it a little...
