Love it. We are fussy, rather snobby foodies. We are regulars. Fabulous coffee, slightly creamy with a good taste; unlike many other places across South Australia who burn milk or serve muddy weak milk coffee. Long blacks and macchiatos are strong, just the way I like it, but not roll back your eyelids stuff. Have tried a vast array of the menu (almost all) and always, and I do mean always, enjoy our choices. I particularly like the changing seasonal menus boards. The breakfast Spanish sausage (lightly black/blood), carmalised onion , poached eggs is my favourite. I love scratching the viniger caramelized onions from the cooking pan. The breakfast pea pancakes , poached eggs, creamy chevre cheese and crispy porchetta is yummy too. The woodfired pizzas are a more "the type la Nonna used to make", thin Italian home made dough, selective and lightly applied toppings type. If you're after a fat fluffy thickly covered pre-prepared topping "American" pizza, then this not the right place for you. Yummy home made pasta, again like la Nonna used to make. The pasta tastes like it's made that morning. I love that many of the meals come with a hard (very hard make your teeth do some heavy workout) crunchy home made sour dough bread; traditional Mediterranean type hardness. Although sharper knives would help here.
The place is almost always busy, this is a good thing. Places that are regularly empty are often empty for very good reasons. So being a busy cafe in a small town particularly at meal time means it's good. The staff are great, pleasantly fun and eager to do their best. The owner takes a very proud hands-on approach, and with extensive experience catering in France/Europe he is justly accommodating. In peak tourist season, the town population increases about seven fold. So seasonal visitors perhaps, sometimes, need to take a step back and appreciate the difference between peak tourist and non touristy capacity. Despite this sudden and very short lived explosion of dinners within a rather confined space, Little Sisters seems to manage well.
When possible we sit outside with our dog and enjoy the day. Not sure if I should have said this because it might make our regular table harder to obtain.
Little Sisters is more a bistro restaurant than a simple cafe. If you're interested in a more traditional cafe experience, it's to be found here too. I would encourage you to be more adventurous; it's more satisfying. Successfully running a more adventurous cafe for a very long period of time, in a very small population town is an achievement. It signifies a dedicated or destination seeking customer base.
If a food place is bad, we will pick up sticks and never return, we are regulars at Little Sisters. This may sound like a paid advertisement or someone with a vested interest; it isn't and we don't beyond being happy, very satisfied...
Read moreWe have been going here almost every year for about 8 years now every time we do a yearly holiday down to South Australia from Queensland.
This place has always been a favourite for me and my family as the staff is so nice, giving my brother and I free hot chocolates when we were younger, catering for our dog which we brough one year, and also showing my brother and I around the kitchen and huge pizza oven, the atmosphere is just so nice, the interior feels like a proper family restaurant and the location is really close to Normalville Beach making it a perfect lunch spot.
While not everything on the menu is respective of its price, with some of the prices being a tad steep in my opinion, the food is still really good. I'm fine with saying I can excuse the prices for the amazing service provided. I remember my brother and I's absolute favourite when we were younger was the "Eggs and Soldiers".. Something like that can't remember the exact name and for a few years when they had the same head chef in the back, he would recognise us each year and occasionally show us around the back how they make the food. Also man the pizzas are so so so good. These I really recommend trying at least once in your life. Another one to definitely try if they still have it, is the lemon curd tart.. aaaah we couldn't leave without having one slice of that just so so so good.
We unfortunetly haven't been down in a while but im planning a trip with my Girlfriend soon and can't wait to stop by here now with my own car once I drive down. I'm writing this review as I have been meaning too for so long but many things got in the way.
10/10 Place to go, definitely one not to miss if...
Read moreVegan Yiros + chips Yummy Yiros with a good amount of middle eastern flavours from the tabbouleh. Filling included mushrooms, Cherry tomatoes, Spanish onions, parsley and tahini. Bread was a little tough and ate just the filling in the last quarter, would have preferred a fluffy Greek Pita bread to add to the enjoyment of the dish. I loved the shoestring fries, crunchy, fresh, hot and well seasoned. I had it with a side of Chai tea in oat milk, which had a lovely spiced fragrance and able to get 2.5 tea cups from the small pot, they also sell the chai in store (along with other goodies) including a caffeine free version that had rooibos (African red tea). Service was really good and staff were knowledgeable and understood the menu and what were the vegan options, food did take a little longer than expected to arrive (approximately 20mins for lunch time) and it was good to see into the open kitchen to see the chefs working away. Atmosphere was really lovely indoors with outdoor seating...
