Arrived around 8:20 after my son and I both worked a long day. It had been hot and we were both tired. Chose this restraunt coz it close, quaint, and foods really nice. The steaks we had were faultless. I wanted a steak and a glass of red wine. I told the waitress I would like a glass of Shiraz but it didn’t come per glass. I was shown the drinks menu, it didn’t come by glass. The last 3 were Rose, Merlot and Chardonnay. I couldn’t think what Chardonnay was (call it a brain fart) I didn’t really want the other 2 so asked for a Chardonnay. As soon as she brought it to the table, I said - oh no it’s white. I hate white wine more than anything. I conceded it was my error and said ‘I can’t drink that, I’m so sorrry, can I have a red wine’. The said NO NO? I had to call her back to take my meal order and asked her to bring me a red wine. She said, yeah I can’t take that back co I can’t pour it back in the bottle. As a business I would of worn that cost for my customers to love that gesture. Am I going back? maybe, but not my choice and certainly not with that girl, and not for dinner on a...
Read moreWe tried both lunch, offering cafe style food, and dinner with a course-based menu. They also have a breakfast menu, and food is fusion. The brunch crowd seems busier than dinner, even though the food is overall very good for both.
For lunch we tried the bulgogi steak sandwich which was tasty but had a fusion bulgogi flavour and a bit too much sweetness, beef burger which would have been very good except for the burger patty which although seasoned was too lean making it a bit dry for our taste but better for the health conscious, and the chicken burger which was our favourite that was fried chicken coated in sauce with cheese and salad filling. The chips accompanying the meals were great, perfectly cooked and crispy on the outside.
Dinner included delicious al dente pastas with sauce too good to waste, a steak tartare done a bit fancier with Gruyere and herbs, and a sticky full of flavour fried chicken wings.
The restaurant has a rustic casual atmosphere with two indoor sections and some small tables out the front. It's not particularly busy, but the food was enjoyable and worth...
Read moreLike walking into a modern take on a lounge, stepping into the Blake Street Merchant is a comfortable entry into a quiet space where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, a meal, cake, or a sandwich.
The rough wooden floorboards add to the charm that is complemented by soft furnishings, booths, or a table, depending entirely on your mood.
Service is attentive without being stifling and the food I had was served hot and fresh at a reasonable cost.
There's also verandah seating, although during the heat of the day, the airconditioning is attractive.
Parking is a little odd. Next door is a massive parking lot, but it threatens clamping and fines for anyone who dares stay over 30 minutes. It's unclear if the lot is intended for a shopping complex next door, even though it shares the wall of the restaurant.
There is limited street parking if you're not keen on braving the threats. I know I would have overstayed my "welcome" if I'd parked there.
