I want to start this review with stating how lovely and friendly the staff were and the decor and vibe of Grandmaâs is on point.
However I have a few comments I hope the owner takes on board as constructive criticism to take their cafe to the next level.
Visiting from interstate (3 of us) we came to Grandmaâs on a Sunday at 8:30am. There were two free tables with bookings that were 45mins away and we were after breakfast and coffee. Unfortunately we were turned away as the staff advised they wouldnât be able to fulfill an order by then. There were also multiple groups of 2 seated at tables of 4. This requires better management of table seatings to ensure you are maximizing profits - a loss of $100+ from us as we had to go elsewhere.
I still wanted to try the famous pancakes while we were visiting so we came back the next day. Luckily it wasnât as busy and we could grab a seat. It was slow to get served but we are on holiday time so didnât mind. We ordered the classic pancakes and I asked for additional seasonal fruit and my partner asked for additional bacon. We also ordered coffees.
Coffees arrived - they were delicious and we appreciated the latte art.
The food arrived and while it presented well, it didnât live up to its âfamousâ title. I hate to say it was really disappointing. First of all the pancakes only came with an additional handful of blueberries rather than the âseasonal fruitâ the other pancakes got. It was also served with minimal maple syrup and cream so once you got through half the first pancake the rest of meal was dry and I donât think I should have to pay for more. The serving needs more generous toppings.
My partners bacon came out and it was hardly cooked, it needed at-least a few extra minutes on the pan to get that correct texture and crispiness that compliments a pancake. We both only ate half our meal as it wasnât great.
Grandmaâs has so much potential. Hoping when we come back to Townsville it...
Read moreCame to this place after reading reviews and hype post on instagram. We love to support local Townsville businesses. As soon as we arrived, we let the staff know by waiting at the counter, and they said they will clean our table after seated. It took several minutes for the table to be cleared, but it was not wiped down at the time. The staff came back and asked if she had the wiped the table. We ordered 2 of their signature shakshukaâs and 2 iced coffees plus a bottle of water as we noticed there didnt seem to have drinking water available. The iced black coffee with condensed milk came out inedible, it tasted like extremely watered down coffee with zero sweetness from the âcondensed milkâ. The iced caramel latte just tasted like caramel milk, with no intensity from the coffee. Their seemed to be disorganisation the whole duration we were there due to no table numbers, and staff not knowing which guests ordered what. All the staff seemed to work blankly with no urgency or care for customer service. After 45 mins wait for a breakfast, a young fella came out and was asking the guests if they ordered shakshukas as they ran out of soft bread.. and only had sourdough. For the food, it was awful. My wife ordered the half rich bolognese half spinach and feta shakshuka, the beef tasted like unseasoned stewed beef with a tin of canned tomato, not cooked down. It was watery and tasted worse with every bite. I ate the sausage and bacon and left the rest. For the premium price you pay, I am not sure what is good. The view/location is on a main road, service is almost non existent, coffee did not taste like coffee, food was borderline inedible. Totally overrated, we left hungry and needing a...
Read moreIâm saddened to have to share this review today. We attended grandmas this morning, very excited to get a table because theyâre usually too busy. Service was lovely, however we were sitting there waiting to be served and no one was serving us but serving others so we got up to order at the till (no biggy) they were SO busy for a small space, not the staff able to cater for how busy they were, we requested no eggs for my partners shakshuka and an additional rosti - this came out with eggs and no rosti and no mushrooms, the lovely lady did go and get the mushrooms for us (not sure how hard it was thought for the chef to understand) + the rosti was very cold in the middle like it hadnât been cooked properly, I ordered the cocoa pancakes which tasted like raw batter, they were sadly horrible. My daughter had the fruit platter which looked amazing BUT there was honey poored all over it (which the menu doesnât state) and my daughter doesnât eat honey which then left the full fruit platter uneaten because honey was over all of it. For $100 we were very unsatisfied with the meals, I felt horrible for the staff run off their feet however they may need to rethink a couple of things especially with their large social media following. We wonât be back...
