whoever said they had lots of vegan options was lying. we came here last minute hoping for the best but ended up disappointed. we came shortly after opening so it wasn’t too busy which meant the staff stood along the wall and watched us which was extremely uncomfortable. not to mention one of the staff was kinda rude and assumed we should know what is and isn’t vegan when we asked, he looked and acted fed up when we talked or had questions making our experience so much worse. from what little information (tried asking what’s vegan and got barely any response, so ended up trying to ask about each individual item i thought could be vegan) i got out of him the options are very limited. basic options if you’re vegan or vegetarian, aka veggie roll, cucumber roll or avocado roll which were way too expensive for the small size. the seaweed salad tasted like it had been sitting on a pile of...

Been going to sushi orient for years, since I was kid new owners for the joint come n go fair enough that’s business. But whoever is running this joint in 2025 needs to to take notes from the previous owner. Because with inflation in mind, how are you going to up the price of your food and then put less on the plate and not even cook it properly. The salmon aburi originally cost $6.00 it is now $6.50, it used to be decent serve of salmon onion chives and rice, and shaves of red onion. NOW it’s a tiny portion of salmon like you would not believe, rice that isn’t even cooked properly, and no shaves of red onion, but somehow I’m paying 50c extra. Service was mid too, this restaurant used to have amazing service, not anymore. Especially for how long I waited for the food to be a spec on my plate, wasn’t even busy. I won’t...

Food tasted great and very fresh. Oysters tasted clean and fresh. We occasionally eat at various Sushi Trains around Cairns and the food at this restaurant was noticeably better, than the Sushi Train franchise which has multiple locations in the Cairns area. I would say the location works against the Orient Express to a degree, because the Orchid Plaza mall is old, somewhat dirty and outdated, really needs a refurbishment. So being in this location I believe has a subconscious effect on potential customers, leading them to think the food is low quality and cheap but actually it’s nice. I’ve lived in Cairns for many years and barely knew this place existed. Great food, next time I’m hankering for Sushi in Cairns , I’ll prioritise...

Really super disappointing. The train is non-existent, there are just sweets that keep running without any logic. There is only one person in the room who has to do everything and runs from one side to the other. It's a la carte sushi, no lie! What's even sadder is to see the menu with the price of the dishes and the cheapest one non-existent. I've never had steamed dumplings…fried. Really against Japanese cuisine. What's more, we ordered several dishes with tuna but 'it was finished'. How can you run out of raw material like that? Not recommended! There are much better ones I’m sorry (There was also miso soup without miso)

I stumbled upon this absolute gem of a restaurant while walking out of the Orchid Plaza. As I entered, I was greeted by a charming gentleman who directed us to our seats, showed us how the conveyer belt system works, and sorted out our beverages. The restaurant is clean and orderly, the staff are quick and skillful, and the food is delicious. For any sushi lovers who are apprehensive or nervous at the conveyer system, PLEASE give it a try. It's a very fun way to dine. This place is an easy 5 stars, and highly recommended.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Cairns. Its a genuine family run business, not a chain, so you can expect friendly service, great food, and good prices. I really enjoyed the aburi salmon bowl, and my partner loved the tasting plate. We'll definitely be going back regularly. The food is cooked in front of you and comes out really fast. Its delicious! They're also licensed, so you can get a local beer with your meal or sushi.
