Gusto used to be my favourite cafe but after today’s experience I will never go back there. I’m over 33 weeks pregnant, it’s my birthday and I wanted to have breakfast with 2 close friends , their 3 young kids, my son and my parents at my favourite cafe. Yes a bigger group but I called ahead to check if they were busy (Wednesday morning at 10:30) and was told it was a quiet morning. So great, I thought we could sit outside because i know inside is a little cramped. Well the Manager could not have been more rude and less accommodating to help us with seating. Yes I understand there are council rules and that’s fine but he was totally unwilling to help us make it work. He wanted us to move inside, which in the end we did agree to bcos apparently umbrellas have to be open and can’t be moved and prams have to be in a certain areas every problem under the sun he could come up with to make seating difficult. He watched me carry tables around without any assistance just roadblocks. After realising the outside was going to be impossible to seat 5 adults and 4 young kids even though only 1 other table was occupied, we agreed to move inside, which was also basically empty, there were 2 other tables seated but he wanted us to sit in the back corner when the entire front right section was free. When we said no, he reluctantly squashed us onto three tables pushed together. We wanted to leave the 2 prams outside but there was no place that suited him even though there was only ONE table occupied outside. So we asked if we could park them at the back of the cafe to which he said no- even though he originally wanted to seat us there because we had prams. By this time I was furious and when I told him he was making our breakfast every unpleasant he accused me of attacking him. Me… the customer who is trying to make a solution to eat at a cafe that was very empty, like he was doing us a favour by letting us eat there. I told him it was my birthday and he said nothing just continued to be rude and in accommodating until my one friend said she would leave because she felt like she was causing seating issues. So disappointing from a cafe Manager to make it so hard for customers to have an enjoyable experience at a very quiet time. Being pregnant I had been craving the Gusto crumpets for a few weeks and was excited to finally eat them. It’s very obvious that despite the price increase the crumpets are half the size and friendly staff are no longer working at this cafe.
I will never go back to Gusto and would not suggest anyone with kids or a group larger than 3 bother to try eat there. To end on a positive note the...
Read moreMy daughter took my partner and I to breakfast at Gusto Food this morning as part of a thank you gift. Our first impression was less than positive as a very grumpy, abrupt girl almost shouted at us to step back outside and sign in with the Covid App. When I replied that only my daughter had the app on her phone she dramatically rolled her eyes and told us "We would just have to wait while she called someone to take our details manually." All of this was done in such an officious manner, if it had been up to me I would have turned around and left. However, it was my daughters choice so we remained. An Asian gentleman, who took our details and found us a table, on the other hand, could not have been more pleasant. As we waited for our orders to arrive we watched this girl interact with other customers and my daughter actually said, "I really don't think she should be working in hospitality, she absolutely doesn't want to be here" From a twenty year old, I found this comment very astute. The waitress in question, was unsmiling and huffy. When asked for eating implements by one table, she actually stomped off to get them, then slammed them on the table when she returned. As she almost threw my meal in font of me she actually tipped my glass of water over (luckily I caught it before it hit the table completely) however she didn't even offer to clean up the spilt water, I had to do that myself with a table napkin. Although we could not fault the food or the other staff members, I am afraid I could not recommend this eatery to anyone as the feeling we departed with was actually relief to be away from such a...
Read moreGusto Food in South Perth is a standout brunch destination that consistently delivers exceptional food. Their homemade crumpets are a signature dish - thick, soft and sticky, served with mixed berries, honey yoghurt, and "peanut gravel" for textural contrast. They strike the perfect balance between sweetness and substance.
The vegetarian fry-up is another highlight - a generous plate featuring perfectly poached eggs, crunchy hash browns, grilled tomatoes, toast, avocado, and a variety of mushrooms, plus halloumi served on a separate dish. Everything is cooked to perfection without any unpleasant greasiness.
Despite its popularity and excellent food, Gusto maintains a surprisingly low-key setup with wipe-clean plastic tables and counter ordering. The space is small and can get busy, especially on weekends, so weekday visits are recommended for shorter wait times. The atmosphere is great despite the limited space, and the staff are friendly and efficient.
Other menu favorites include the Cuban sandwich oozing with cheese, the French toast with Nutella gravel, and their scrambled eggs which receive consistent praise. With generous portions, reasonable prices, and food that keeps customers coming back, Gusto Food has rightfully earned its reputation as one of Perth's best...
