The Pocket Espresso Bar After searching the Google reviews I decided to try "The Pocket Espresso Bar". It would be my first time here in my continued search of that elusive 5 star caffeine fix like Indiana Jones on crusades. Its 7am, a line of a few locals in their morning surf, walking attire and contractors chatting wait outside the takeaway area eager for their fix. Inside the Cafe there is a mix of dark walls with red tied back curtains in booths. An eclectic blend of old tables chairs and a rear outside area. Laughter echos from out the back. Clearly a business meeting....cough.
A old fella hunched over and clearly a local, called Jimbo wanders slowly in and out like a old tom cat that the locals know. His picture adorns the wall and the boss calls him a troll but it is an endearment not a insult. I order 2 poached eggs on toast and cappuccino. Jimbo drifts past me muttering something unintelligible and heads out like a man on a mission.
Soon my food arrives. Where are the f.... poached eggs I think, instead 2 boiled eggs on the plate with two large pieces of sourdough toasted with sticks of butter that will stop this old heart. I realise the eggs are soft cooked, I roll them onto the sourdough and like a surgeons hand I swiftly extract and spread their googy delicious contents across the crisp sourdough.
Cappuccino arrives, I am anxious, its well presented, temperature is excellent. Have I discovered the god of caffeine, the numero uno, the taste is good, silky, chocolate like (not the stuff on the top fools) and like your lovers kiss, but (as the French say) qui manque de qch that certain thing to take it to the holy grail of caffeine status. All that aside it is a fricking damn fine coffee and highly recommended as for the amount of Cafes within Caloundra I would say up there with Beaus Café. Service was ok a bit absent, the wait staff was friendly but I am not a local.

Read moreI have been coming to this place for a fair few years with my son. I was disgusted today at the way I was made to feel with my son. I ordered a coffee and a hot chocolate at the counter. The lady said to my son, would you like a marshmallow? She was polite and friendly. We sat waiting and I saw my coffee on the side. I went up and asked politely, “is there a hot chocolate on its way?” The lady behind the coffee machine was abrupt and kept saying “ I don’t know whats written on it” I said to her it is my name, all good. I sat down by the side again and then saw the waitress with blond hair looking over and they were both laughing. Clearly it was directed at me. When the hot chocolate was called I picked it up and my son asked me if he could have the marshmallow. I went back over to the coffee machine and asked politely for a marshmallow and left the hot chocolate on the side. I then saw the lady behind the coffee machine reach over and slap the marshmallow down on top of the hot chocolate lid, as they both laughed. She did not have gloves on and just used her hands to wack it down, quite clearly annoyed at the request. I got up to get it and i don’t even think the waitress realised I actually witnessed what was going on. We sat there as my son drank his hot chocolate and we were made to feel unwelcome and uneasy as they continued to stare and scowl at us. I will never go back to this place again and to make customers feel like this and to treat them this way is a disgrace. Of course I wasn’t the only customer that witnessed this as the man opposite us asked me…”wow what’s her problem...
Read moreLong term customer who is done ordering my morning coffee at the Pocket and seeing how little staff know about hygiene and handling - won't be coming for meals anymore either. NO idea why staff have a new habit - my take away cup should only be handled from the base- but they happily stick their fingers in it and around the rim (even after patting a dog). We are in Australia and I thought health and safety education was a big deal in hospitality - not at The Pocket. And now the coffee is totally inconsistent - some days it is at the usual high standard but other days - luke warm - Jumbo cup not filled (only a little over half) milky - maybe one shot of coffee. 7.50 for staffs fingers in the cup and slightly warm milk. Let me know when you train ur staff back up and you can deliver with some consistency. I'm not interested in flavouring what ever is on the staffs fingers first thing in the morning while I sip on luke warm...
