Restaurant Review: A Friday Feast in Maroochydore
If you’re strolling down Ocean Street on a Friday afternoon, wondering where to celebrate the end of the workweek, look no further than this hidden gem in Maroochydore. I popped in for a late lunch around 2:30 PM and left feeling like I’d just discovered the eighth wonder of the world—wrapped in lettuce and hoisin sauce, no less.
First off, let’s talk service. Forget about the dreaded QR code menus that make you feel like you’re scanning in for a tech conference rather than ordering lunch. Here, a real live human took our order, a rare luxury these days! The ambiance screamed “Friday knock-off drinks” with a side of chill, perfect for unwinding after a long week. The place was spotless too, which always makes me feel better about eating somewhere that serves squid and soft-shell crab.
Now, onto the food. The Viet Haus Spring Rolls kicked things off—two crispy bites packed with prawn, pork, squid, and water chestnuts. They were so good that I considered ordering a second round. Then came the Pork Bao Bun, which was basically a cloud stuffed with crackling pork belly, pickled carrots, and a hoisin sauce so good I wanted to ask if they sold it by the jar. And I haven’t even mentioned the lettuce, which made me feel like I was eating healthy, even though I was 90% sure I wasn’t.
For the mains, we had the Crispy Vietnamese Pancake "Banh Xeo" and the Soft Shell Crab in Tamarind Sauce "Cua Rang Me". The pancake was a golden, crunchy delight that managed to hold its own despite the fact that I was trying to eat it with all the grace of a giraffe on roller skates. As for the crab, let's just say that if there’s any dish that could convince me to leave my day job and become a professional crab eater, this is it. The tamarind sauce was tangy and sweet, the perfect dance partner for that crispy crab.
And then came dessert: Durian Sticky Rice with Ice Cream. Now, durian isn’t for the faint-hearted, but let me tell you, this dish was a revelation. The sticky rice was just the right amount of sweet, and the durian? Well, let’s just say it’s the only fruit that smells like gym socks but tastes like heaven. I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of flavors, and I’m pretty sure I’m now a durian convert.
In short, the flavors were fresh, the service was spot on, and the food came out faster than you can say "Banh Xeo." I’m definitely coming back, and you should too. Just make sure to bring your appetite and leave the QR code...
Read moreAppalling. Waited in person for a while to order some takeaway- was ignored so decided to order takeaway online. Ordered a few items including the beef pho to take to a nearby park and eat. No explanation online or in person during collection that there was a raw beef component of this dish and the broth required heating at home to cook the meat. My partner ate some of the raw beef and soon realised it wasn’t cooked at all. We called up to ask whether this was a mistake or meant to be part of the dish. They explained that it needed cooking at home but we said we were never planning on eating at home, that we were just down the road and asked for a replacement dish. We ordered the chicken with sticky rice for the same price. When my partner went to collect, he was intensely patronised. They said “anyone who orders pho should know how it is served”. But we never have before and we ordered takeaway. Takeaway simply means just taking it away from the restaurant, it doesn’t mean that we are going directly home to eat it. They also mentioned that several customers had complained of this same issue before but they didn’t rectify it because the customer had eaten the whole dish. Why not include on your website some instructions about this if it is such a pertinent issue? Or give verbal instructions? There was also a hair in our chicken sticky rice. Not impressed. My partner was also asked to pay 50% of the rice cost when he went to collect it, this was not discussed over the phone. Never...
Read moreVery disappointing experience. Booked in advance and arrived in time. Asked a waiter to confirm ingredients and texture of a dish before ordering. Waited for over an hour to finally get our meals, only to discover that the dish I ordered was not what had been described by the waiter. Instead it was a dish with texture I couldn't eat. They offered to change the meal but after such long wait it didn't sound like a good option, we were hungry and had a tired child with us. They didn't apply any discount to the bill. The food was good, not great. Not coming back.
In response to your response - THIKEN is not an English word. That's why we started by asking the waiter whether this was meant to be THICK/ THICKENED or CHICKEN SOUP. He explained it was a CHICKEN BROTH. Based on this we made the order. I can see how it could have been a genuine misunderstanding. Anyone can make a mistake. The way the business responds to mistakes is what matters. You...
