The new kid on the block in Marrickville. Good to see itâs finally open.
We visited on a busy Sunday and a few options were already sold out. Thatâs ok, I wanted the Hot Salami which was still available.
FOH service was friendly but BOH things looked super inefficient. There were 4-5 people preparing food, stuff everywhere, hands flying all over the place, but with very very few sandwiches popping out. Hence, there was a lot of people waiting for their food and I think we waited 20 minutes for our sandwiches to come out.
Iâve visited the super popular and touristy All'Antico Vinaio in Florence, Italy, and Iâll say I much preferred Bertas sandwich over theirs. The bread was fresh and crunchy. The salami good quality. The fennel and rocket added freshness and the chilli mayo creamy with a punch, but perhaps a little bit too much of it.
AllâAntico, though, runs like a well-oiled machine. Bertas needed someone in the kitchen cracking the whip a little.
Overall, a good new lunch spot in Marrickville. The food tastier and better quality than the famous global chain that no doubt...

I got âFennel Two Waysâ on gluten free, removing the cheese to make dairy free.
The gluten free focaccia did not disappoint, with the juicy ingredients and sufficient amounts of sauce there was no nasty dryness you get from some gluten free sandwiches or burgers.
First you get a hit of spicy mayo, followed by the sweet and pickley zesty fennel, then the umami prosciutto that I added on (I recommend this step). Balanced. Delicious. Nutritious ? We got in just in time before they sold out.
Worth the wait, these guys are busting out sandwiches in full power...
Read moreVisited Bertas recently and left with mixed feelings. The food was genuinely good â well-prepared and tasty, definitely the highlight of the visit. Unfortunately, the same canât be said for the coffee. The first cup we received was undrinkable, and after asking for it to be remade, the second attempt wasnât much better. It became clear that the barista, who had noticeably bleached eyebrows, didnât quite grasp that different types of milk require different steaming temperatures â a basic but crucial part of making a good coffee. For a cafĂŠ, thatâs a big miss. If they can invest in better coffee training, Bertas could become a great spot. Until then, go for the food â but maybe...
