I can only presume that people are not reviewing because I’m staggered to see still such a high mark. Unfortunately Big Dave’s has been very hit and miss since we started going there a 2/3 years back and we’ve slowly stopped adding this to our list of takeaway food. When it’s good it simply good not great. When it’s bad it’s terrible. The Cod is generally ok just very pricey and definitely good to have proper cod every now and then. The chips however are so poor at times you wonder why you bother. So many times simply poor and tonight was one of those. You just knew it when you opened the box and saw how dark the chips were. Not even burnt but clearly something not right. What pisses me off though is the fact the person cooking would’ve known once again they were not right. They simply don’t care presumably as they do get some business. Not a patch on the traditional chip shop in its heyday but they too drooped in standard and and kept raising prices until they were out of business. Part of the appeal to those people from uk and Ireland is the dishes they serve so quality is overlooked. Can’t overlook it any longer as it’s very expensive. Sad but enough is enough. No longer will we roll the dice, far...
Read moreI have to tell a little story first.
When I was little and living in Port Macquarie we had a chip shop. My dad used to call this shop “old mates”. They made the best hand cut fat chips. One day they moved away and sold their store. Chips were never the same and it lost business.
Fast forward to being in my 30s and I’ve been looking for the same chip the whole time. Big Dave’s come as close as I have gotten to “Old Mates” chips. I LOVE my chips on the softer side and frozen thin pre-made chips that most shops are doing just don’t make it for me. These chips were perfect.
Usually with other chips I’m digging through looking for the “good ones”. This time Every chip was a “good” chip and as a result I ate more than I should have. It was a generous serving. The gravy tasted great too!!
Batter on the fish was perfect, not too thick and the fish was nice, soft and flakey (I cooked my own cod once and regretted it).
I know everyone has their own special preference for how they like chips and batter so maybe some won’t agree but I loved it and I’m glad I was put onto their existence. My only negative is that I live in penshurst and not...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic little chip shop and we love taking the drive in on a weekend or day off. Some other reviews here are a load of old shite. In all the times we have visited we have had one long wait but it was a Saturday and it's busy. If you complain about Uber then more fool you for using it.
Staff have always been lovely and friendly even when they are getting slammed with orders and the que is out the door. The older lady is always fantastic to our two little kids and they love going there.
Highly recommend the spice bag and a battered sausage. Other half if Aussie and she loves the cod and chips. Kids and everyone loves a jambon and a packet of Tayto for the road.
Beautiful food, fantastic service with a smile at all times and a lovely taste of home. Some of you may have also forgotten about the shambles of home style chippers we have had before which were awful and disappeared after a couple of years due to not paying their own kind properly or fairly.
Big Dave I hope you stay around and your food and service are fantastic. Well worth the 1 hour drive for a treat when we...
