My friends and I felt like a good steak dinner and ended up making a reservation here at Chophouse. I hadn't visited this restaurant before, and we were walking so I used Google Maps to help find the way. Interestingly I found it quite difficult to find. The restaurant is quite dark outside, the sign out front is not lit up and the restaurant sits back off the street in a darkened area, so we actually walked past it several times while Google Maps kindly told me to walk back and forth along the street.
Once inside we were all immediately impressed with the cozy and romantic vibe. After being seated, after some consideration, we ordered some drinks, entrees and our mains. I'll just be up front and say that from start to finish we must have had at least 4 different staff members assisting us, and the service was exemplary; everybody was professional, friendly and helpful.
Obviously we all ordered steak for our mains, and this restaurant is known for it's steak (at least this is my impression, since I read quite a few blog posts rating this restaurant highly). I ordered a ribeye (scotch fillet) and my friends ordered eye-fillets. The mains took quite some time to arrive, although this didn't bother us whatsoever, it's just that we couldn't help noticing that it took a while.
Admittedly I didn't really enjoy my ribeye very much, even when smothered in their bordelaise sauce. It seemed to be cooked to medium rare, as I'd requested, but it just didn't have that "magic" that I've come to expect from a medium rare ribeye. It wasn't until the end when I noticed a small dish of rock salt sitting on the corner of the table, when I considered that, perhaps, if I'd sprinkled some of that over my steak it would have tasted much better. If only I had noticed it earlier. Also at 300g the steak is quite thin, unlike the 1.5" steaks I sometimes cook at home on my grill. I also tried the eye fillets and those were absolutely wonderful, I really enjoyed those, seriously they were just awesome and I regretted not buying one instead. Just wanted to slip in a little comment about the entrees. I ordered the crispy squid and I thought that for the tiny assortment of squid pieces you get, for $28 it is quite poor value. The tiny milk buns also probably cost 15c each to make, but at $10 they're not so great value. Anyway don't take these as complaints, it's just that I would probably choose not to buy these next time. One other thing to mention is they have a vast selection of cocktails and wine, and although I don't really drink I did get a cocktail for fun.
So overall definitely I would recommend this restaurant if you desire a good steak (or even if you don't), appreciate good service, and would like a to eat in a setting that is warm, cozy...
Read moreWe have been here a few times now and we fell in love with this steakhouse.
I love starting with a dry vodka martini, with their fabulous spicy pickled onion – it will set the tone for your meal! One time, we had our pre-dinner drink at the bar, and had a wonderful ‘Cheers’-like experience with our bartender. If a vodka martini is not your speed, there is an extensive cocktail list on offer.
Or, you can go straight to the excellent wine menu, listing some beautiful reds that will complement your choice of choice meat perfectly.
Although the highlight are the meats from the grill and broiler, there are many treasures among the entrées, such as the mind-blowing Jalapeno poppers (served sautéed in butter the night we tried it), delicious stuffed zucchini flowers, and the charcuterie plate. We are also partial to the delicious pork belly & sea scallop salad which pops with flavour.
The Chophouse wagyu beef burger is delicious, and practically a bargain at 22.90, served with pickles, Monteray Jack cheese sauce, and crunchy shoestring fries.
But the most memorable Chophouse meat experiences are the tomahawks!
If you can have only one, go for the Angus Hereford Cross beef tomahawk. It serves up to four people comfortably, served with the crunchy shoestring fries, sautéed mushrooms, and three tasty sauces. The meat is pure ecstasy, with the fat cooked to absolute perfection.
If you have enough people with you, or it’s just the two of you, the pork tomahawk served with crackling, apple fritters, crunchy shoestring fries, and sauces is delectable.
The dessert menu is surprisingly strong for a steakhouse. The brûlée, flavoured with pineapple and lime when we last visited, was well-balanced and perfectly textured, and the blended Swiss chocolate chopping block with nutella and roasted hazelnuts was a delicious end to a fabulous meal.
And I love a restaurant that does a good, classic affogato!
The service is personable and professional, delivered with ease...
Read moreLast weekend my partner and I went to chophouse for our last dinner in Sydney and to say the least, the experience was incredible. When we arrived, we were greeted by Fiona the manager who was warm and welcoming while showing us to our table. When we were seated, we met our server Bentley who was amazing to us the entire night. When he took our drink orders, my partner asked for a cocktail recommendation to her preferences, and Bentley went above and beyond and had a special cocktail made for her that was not even on the drink menu, and was perfect. He was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the different cuts of steaks and had recommendations for everything.
When we ordered, our food came promptly and looked great. For our appetizer we went with the squid, which was a great starter and got us really looking forward to the main dishes. I went with a bone in rib eye and my partner with the wagyu rump cap, and both of us wholeheartedly agreed that this was the best steak we’ve had in our entire lives. The flavours were astonishing, and the melt in your mouth texture of the steaks can hardly be described with words. We had mushrooms and the potatoes for the sides which went great with the meal. During the meal our drinks were constantly topped up and we were often checked in on to make sure everything was great, it was fantastic service. After we had finished, even though we were completely stuffed we could not resist ordering the apple crumble to share, which was a perfect dessert to end off the evening.
All in all, we had an incredible evening at Chophouse, and everyone from the front staff to the waiter, to the kitchen was incredible. To anyone looking for a steakhouse in Sydney, Chophouse is a fantastic restaurant with service that shines. If we are in Sydney again, we will definitely be...
