Hubert does 3 things exceptionally well: ambience, passionfruit souffle w the cultured cream, service.
Their food for the most part is also quite excellent. Is it the best French food you can get in Sydney? No. But it certainly is one of the best French restaurants, quite unbeatable in its charm and ambience with the live jazz band. I think this is what keeps me coming back time and time again + the passionfruit souffle. You can safely take family, friends or a date here and genuinely guarantee a pretty good time.
Must orders: Passionfruit souffle. Takes 20-25min to come out of the kitchen and we have, many times, convinced others on the table that it’s worth sitting through another 25 min wait to have a round 2 of the soufflés. So very good. Duck Parfait, goes very well with their house bread. My favourite of the entrees always. Miso butter kingfish, random suggestion from the waiter that actually ended up being very nice. Gruyère Souffle: is always nicely done here, not the biggest serving so might need multiple but if you have a lot of lactose intolerants on the table I’m not sure how much of this they can have without keeling over anyways Beef tartare: it’s a huge serving and tastes like maccas Big Mac but not in a bad way so we do always order this for the table Kimchi Gratin, good side to have w steak Layered potatoes w Miso, ditto as above Their best steak imo is the Kiwami 9+ wagyu for right balance of tenderness and beefy umami taste, Sirloin pales in comparisons if eaten in the same meal but fundamentally not bad, Rib eye is ok pretty good but I’d rather just get multiple of the kiwami 9+ than the rib eye
Can skip but not bad: Spanner Crab dish, it’s ok Roe Boat, don’t get me wrong this is nice (unless you don’t like sea urchin or caviar) but at $19 one slurrrp per person just source the ingredients yourself and eat it at home when you’re craving uni and caviar man Escargots, tastes like escargots do. Order if someone on the table really wants snails
Service is always good and attentive, they somehow always come to change the candle before it is on its last leg. I have also yet to see a candle tip over and threaten to burn the place down thankfully.
One thing to note- tablets of 6 or more incur an additional 10% gratuity. Yeah so don’t dine on a Sunday w a big group or public holiday unless you enjoy being stun with an eg 1000 x 1.1 (Sunday rate) x 1.1 (obligatory gratuity)=1210 like we did once. Aka that’s an additional 21%, kinda high for Aus...
Read moreRestaurant Hubert is located in the business bustle of downtown Sydney CBD. The unassuming doors on Bligh St open to a speak easy style decent down winding stairs and past display cabinets full of mini alcohol bottles. The quirky fun of this grand entrance continues as it splays out into the dining room. With high ceilings and rich wood mouldings the ambiance is second to none. You really feel like you have been transported to a 1920’s French bistro.
The venue also has a cinema which I popped my head into and was amazed how far this rabbit hole went!!
Service is outstanding. We were served by the ever charming and super attentive Vincent (call him Vinny). A native Parisian who knew his stuff and without any pretence guided us through the menu and drinks and gave excellent advice on what we should drink and eat for our group of two.
We ordered some of the amazing entrées which were all excellently presented and prepared. The attention to detail and the quality of the food is sensational.
The row boats are a tiny serving packed with flavour. As you work your way through the edible boat you are greeted with three very distinct levels of salty ocean goodness. The change is texture adds to the experience.
If you aren’t a fan of snails, don’t worry, it’s almost worth getting the escargots just for the knock out XO butter sauce that coat the shelled little suckers lol. Served with crunchy bread to help mop up every last drip of the delectable butter.
Stand out dish for me was the prime beef tartare. A really generous serving of succulent beef what was marinated perfectly with pickles and condiments. The crunchy potato giving a really lovely contrast to the delicate beef.
For main we shared the Chateaubriand which is a sizeable 500g eye fillet. If you are getting any of their steaks you should spend the extra dosh and get the foie Gras as it adds such an amazing richness and flavour to the dish.
The only downside to our meal was that we got a little exited ordering food and there was no way we were able to fit in desert. We even had to ask for a doggie bag to take home the remainder of our steak and salad.
All in all an amazing place for dinner and one that you should treat yourself to over and over again!! It’s not cheap, but hey, you only live once and eating here is...
Read moreHubert's Happy Hour is not one to miss. 5-6pm daily. Ambience is sultry, moody and dimly lit and transports you down the stairs to a jazz bar on the backstreets of Paris. Our party of two were seated at the bar.
The cocktails weren't strong but were a fair pour for happy hour drinks. Gin and Tonic ($7) used Tanqueray Gin and canned tonic water served in a collins glass. The white wine ($7) was also nice, but the standout was the Chartreuse Apple ($7) which was made with freshly juiced apples and had a zesty tang to it.
The staff here are amazing. Attentive, friendly, and at the top of their game. Refilling water, asking for orders and ensuring turnover of tables during peak period.
We ordered food from the Happy Hour menu. The Fleur de courgettes ($6) were lightly battered, salted and a delight.
The saucisson ($10) was thinly sliced and served with cornichons. It was tasty and nicely presented we weren't sure if it would served as a whole sausage.
We got food envy seeing the Huberts burger ($18) on tables near us, so ordered one to share, which they kindly cut in half for us. We were asked if we wanted fries (+$6) which we replied yes to (how could you not?) but would be good if this was an add on with the happy hour menu. We asked for ketchup and mayo which were complimentary.
The burger was delicious, excellent char on the patty, medium inside, cheese and raw onion. The french fries were a sensation. Garnished with a seaweed salt - we think? Huge portion.
Looking on the other tables the duck liver parfait looked excellent value, but the ratio of crackers was a bit off. Lots of food wastage on the pate, so maybe add more crackers or serve a smaller portion of pate. Keen to try on next visit. A cheese addition to the happy hour menu would be well received.
When we left at around 6.30pm the restaurant part was already filling up and buzzing with a 3 piece jazz band having taken the stage. Great vibes.
Their eftpos machine allows for split payments (of equal and unequal amounts!) What is this technology?! and why wont other venues adopt it too? Merci...
