Combining a fast weeknight dinner with a visit to my favourite Asian supermarket saw us dine at Fresh & Hot Wolli Creek. Both businesses are set at the bases of residential towers clustered near the train station. The key point of difference at this chain, who also have eateries in shopping centres in Rhodes and Chippendale, is they offer more than one soup base. A milder laksa style broth caters for those who don’t like the regular Sichuan-style hot and numbing soup called ma la tang. It’s a great opportunity to grab a bowl and tongs and choose your own hot soup adventure.
Labelling is still a gap for this chain, but I’ve rarely disliked any ingredient I have chosen for my soup. Expect to find the usual range of thinly sliced meats, fresh seafood, Asian greens, mystery balls and mushrooms alongside countless iterations of bean curd and noodles. The fried items, from layered bean curd and fishcake to little vegetable fritters, work very nicely in the resulting soup. You pay $31.80/kilo for your soup when you weigh in at the counter. For me that was 530 grams ($16.85) and my dining companion it was 810 grams ($25.76). The broth here has more complexity than it did when I visited their Central Park store, though it still benefits from stirring though a liberal helping of all the available sauces (garlic, sesame, chilli).
The restaurant itself is attractively furnished and well lit. It’s decorated with a series of waving lucky cats on blonde wood shelves, their importance cemented in a colourful mural in the rear of a lucky cat with a steaming bowl of noodles. Staff are friendly to first timers, and it shows in the culturally diverse crowd filling every table on the night I dined. Don’t worry about reservations, they turn over tables...
Read moreI stumbled upon Fresh And Hot in Wolli Creek purely by chance, looking for a quick bite after a long day exploring the city. It wasn't what I expected, but in the best way possible.
The restaurant itself is no-frills, with simple tables and chairs. But the real star of the show is the food. They specialize in "ma la tang," a spicy Sichuan hot pot where you choose your own ingredients. It was my first time trying it, and I was a little intimidated at first.
Luckily, the staff was incredibly friendly and patient. They explained the whole process – picking your protein, veggies, and noodles, then choosing your spice level and broth. I went for a mild broth and ended up adding a bit more spice at the sauce station (they have a whole selection of sauces to customize your heat and flavor).
The food itself was fantastic. Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. The broth was flavorful, and the spice level was just right for me (although I saw some people braving the super spicy option!). It was a fun and interactive dining experience, and I left feeling happy, full, and pleasantly tingly from the spice.
Overall, I highly recommend Fresh And Hot to anyone looking for a delicious and unique dining experience in Wolli Creek. Just be prepared to get a little hands-on and...
Read moreVery bad experience and service! Today we came in me my wife and my dad. I wanted rice with chicken. The worker pointed at the chickens for us. I told her that I want vegetables with chicken. When she scooped it in for me I realized something that looked like sausage meat. I asked the worker what it is and she said it's chicken. I was not convinced so I asked her to check for me with the chef. The chef came and said that it's PORK sausage.!! We are Muslims and not allowed to eat PORK! I told her to make me a new tray with rice and different chicken as we can not eat PORK. Another young lady worker came and she was angry with bad attitude!! She said ok I give you new one in a loud voice. We did not like the service we got from them! There for we never coming back here again. We travel all the way here to eat the nice soup they have which is tasty. But really after this bad customer service we got never again. We will spend our money...
