Crayfish rice set: 4/7 A surprisingly big bowl of crayfish with lots of sauce to go with rice. The “crayfish” itself looked like small cut up prawn like meat but really have no idea what it actually is. Tastes decent enough, the flavour is mostly condensed all in the sauce. Just ok, would try other items next time.
“Mouth watering chicken”: 4/7 Pretty typical - nothing special about this one. Chicken wasn’t dry but could be better cooked / cut. Sauce is mostly chilli and a bit of sesame / peanut. Would have liked more of the sesame and peanut.
Scallion noodles: 6/7 This is the highlight of this restaurant. Very authentic shanghainese dry noodle with spring onion sauce. The noodles are also very good - well cooked, with a springiness.
Smoked fish: 5/7 Pretty good. Not dry, fairly large portion as an accompaniment to the noodles. Not too sweet either.
Pork mince sauce: 3/7 Too watery and the pork mince was too fine. Didn’t really work well as an accompaniment.
Simple noodles: 6/7 Clean soup, good noodles - great for an easy going breakfast.
Braised pork belly: 6/7 Very large and generous piece that they can drop into your noodles. Great accompaniment. They just pre-made it, chill it, cut it, then drop it straight into your noodles.
Pork cutlet and rice cake: 5/7 Very thin cutlet but that let’s them cook it really nice and tender. The batter is crispy, with a good sauce. Rice cake is not the traditional big one, but still decent after frying.
Fish style pork stir fry: 5/7 Huge portion that tastes good. Great volume of sauce to go with the meat and veggies, while keeping a decent ratio. The number of buns they provide is definitely not enough, so a bit of extra rice would be good. This dish alone is probably enough for 2 people.
Smoked duck: 4/7 It’s decent, but personally not the biggest fan. Very smoky, didn’t like how it came out cold.
Shanghai eel: high 5/7 Bonus points for actually having the item in stock… very saucy and really packs a punch. Ratio of eel to other stuff is a bit low, but acceptable. Decent value and tastes close to what’s expected...
Read more(3.5 stars) Wolli Creek is home to another pocket of good value dining in this increasingly expensive city. Like Noodle Wolli Cree is my latest find. I was lured in by yabbies advertised in window posters. It’s a Shanghainese chain, which formerly had outlets in Hurstville and Kingsford. The popular Wolli Creek restaurant sits opposite Orange Supermarket near the train station. With overhead ropes and rings, the decor makes it feel like you are dining in a gymnasium. Ordering is done at the counter, though steaming bowls of noodles are quickly delivered to the table by friendly, welcoming staff.
The aforementioned yabbies ($22.80) are stewed in thirteen spices with well-dressed cucumber and vegetable salad, and a mound of white rice. The aromatic broth assaults you with Sichuan peppercorns. It’s absolutely loaded with yabbies and excellent for dipping your double-layer shallot pancake into ($7.80). The namesake homemade noodles with one topping ($13.90) are offered as soup or dry splashed with scallion oil for an extra buck. My chosen adornment—spicy diced pork with potato and tofu—was tasty, balanced nicely by a creamy soy egg ($2.60). Soft drinks, from the yogurt-based chilli companion, Calpis ($3.80), to cans of too-sweet Chinese tea ($3.80) wrap up a cheap and...
Read moreNIGHTMARE IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES. We went to this restaurant and asked if particular dishes have my child's allergen present or not. The claim to have checked with the chef and confirmed that the 3 dishes are safe and do not contain the allergen. Food comes to the table and we begin eating. I call the staff back before my child tries a noodle dish because they look like the type of noddles that contain the allergen. The tell me again it doesn't contain the allergen. We continue eating. Then they come back and say that Yes the noddles do have the allergen but they other two dishes definitely do not. Luckily the child with allergy didn't have any noodles. The child only eats the two dishes they said are clear of allergen. We are finishing up the food and they then come over AT THE END OF THE MEAL WHEN WE HAVE FINISHED EATING and advise that they don't actually know if the food the child ate contained the allergen or not. Allergens are VERY SERIOUS and life threatening. This restaurant has a green "Excellent food safety" poster that should just be ripped up until they get an education on allergens and how to...
