I’ve been to Japan but I can’t say I’m an expert in izakayas , however walking into this restaurant made me feel back there. The service is amazing , the lady that took our order gave us recommendations and even offered to give us a taste in case we didn’t like it (she said the cuttlefish had a really strong flavor , which it did but we enjoyed a lot)

We tried several entrees, cuttflefish, homemade smoked herring roe and dried squid. The squid was tasty but something you would expect. The other two were very interesting. The cuttlefish as mentioned before had a strong flavour, the lady described it similar to Vegemite taste, however I found it went well paired with my sake. On the other hand as expected the smoked herring roe had a very smokey flavour to it, but the way it cracked in your mouth and the texture of it was very interesting.

We then ordered a sashimi platter, it had tuna, salmon, vinegared mackerel and kingfish. In Sydney I usually find the salmon to be the best however in this case the kingfish was the real surprise, it just melted in your mouth.

Finally to wrap up we ordered ox tongue and wagyu asparagus as well as a rice ball. Out of these, the ox tongue was my absolute favourite, it was juicy and tasty. Wagyu had a bit of a strong sweet soy sauce taste which was nice but not my favourite. The rice ball seemed to me like an onigiri with rice and pickles it was also very nice. Finally we got an order of gyozas , they were not bad but compared to the rest of the food I think everything else stands out more.

Overall, its a very small place and you need to get a booking days before but its worth coming here, the food and service...

15/10. Our absolute FAVOURITE Japanese restaurant in Sydney. No frills, just simply delicious, comfort, Japanese food. 🙇🏻‍♀️😋

I've been coming to Nom since 2012 when I first arrived to Sydney. To date, I've probably eaten there almost 15x and have tried almost every item on the menu, yet I'm STILL amazed at how effortlessly delicious the food is every single visit.

The 𝙏𝘼𝙈𝘼𝙂𝙊 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧. I don't say this often... But my mouth literally waters everytime I think of this multi-layered, soft, fluffy, steamy egg omelette. I don't know what goes into it, but it is soooo full of umami and has a subtle sweetness that just makes you crave for more. I can go on and on about this egg, it is truly thaaaaat magical. Trust me.

Their whole menu is simple yet each dish is executed with poise and knowledge of how textures and flavours balance out. Portions are like your typical izakaya snacks that go perfectly well with a nice cold beer. Between 2 people, you can easily order 5-7 dishes to try.

𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁: Tamago Mentai potato salad Vinegar mackerel But literally everything is good.

I've also gotta mention, this small izakaya only seats about 6 tables and is runned by 3 older Japanese ladies (could be 3 generations?) in a tiny kitchen -- it honestly feels like you're just eating at a Japanese grandmother's home - simply welcoming,...

Well, this is an interesting little find! tucked away in darlinghurst, just a short stroll down from (p)Oxford st, you would never know it's there, with the relatively nondescript door hiding behind some fibrous tassels, it's just the type of authentic looking hidden gem, true foodies love:). Some friends took us there and we ordered an assortment of dishes, some more unusual - like natto served with raw tuna or seared ox tongue - and some standards like prawn tempura (was more crumbed than battered), agedashi tofu, tuna sashimi, gyoza. All were yummy (except natto - definitely an aquired taste) but I wouldn't say exceptional. prices were reasonable ie, not cheap but definitely not expensive. Highlights were that the head waitress offered to taste sake before choosing (never had this before and very much appreciated) and she was delightful and there were many dishes for someone looking for the out of the ordinary. Lowlight was the 1 younger waitress with attitude and good to see that she seems to have been mentioned in other reviews. Give the place a try if you like adventure and quality. Hopefully the young waitress is not a family member and they either retrain or...

The best Japanese cuisine I’ve ever had in Sydney. I was lucky to get a table without booking, but it is most suggested to have your seats booked before arriving there. The boss lady and the staffs were really nice and friendly. The Cold Tofu is topped by dried fish flakes (鰹節), spring onions and a touch of ginger, which has added a hint of Japanese taste to the entrée. Perfect for the summer time. The Ox Tongue dish MUST come with a bowl of rice. The softness of ox tongue with just the simplest seasoning, salt and pepper, is enough to melt your tongue and brain. Can’t say it is the best in the world but definitely the best I’ve ever had. Soft Bones is a classic combo with sake, but also a perfect match with plain rice. The fried flour cloth on the bone kept the meaty flavor and the sauce inside, so that the dish is crispy outside whilst juicy inside. Fabulous.
