I saw someone did a one star review 8 hours ago having a whinge about the wait time and that the tacos weren’t filled - it looks like the photo this man included in his review has had some of the taco filling taken from the taco and the photo has four tacos in the takeaway box when the tacos here come in a THREE pack. He claims this joint is over hyped yet he did a five star review of another joint in Haberfield that IS actually overhyped. I digress. I was also here on Saturday night the same as this man and what he has failed to mention is that the wait times are long because there are THREE people working in their food truck which I might add is incredibly tiny. The employees are doing an absolutely wonderful job considering the circumstances, and this place is also next to the petrol station. It’s not a restaurant and the man whinging below is treating it as such, he has clearly never worked in hospitality. I went at 6pm with my partner and this guy, given by his whinging of the weather that shockingly the employees don’t control - he must have been at the food truck towards the end of the night. I had chicken tacos and got them spicy. Let me tell you - this is proper spicy like how it should be. The condiments of salsa are in communal bottles at the food collection passage and the bottles are all clearly labeled for the baby Anglos who whinge about wait times and any sort of spice. I went for medium spice with the salsa, I used salsa verde and it was fiery and perfect. The ‘wait time’ (get over it people) was worth it. This is easily the most authentic and best Mexican food I’ve had in Australia and it made me incredibly nostalgic for when I was in Mexico. All I was missing was a frosty cold Corona with a wedge of lime. The tacos were very decently sized. My partner got the beef tacos and we shared the charred corn cob that has cheese and mild salsa on it - MIND BLOWN! The smokiness of flavors was delectable. We will definitely be back here. We drove from Stanmore but this food is that good that I’d walk the 3.3km there. Also, the staff were so lovely and I heard them saying to everyone “sorry for the long wait” upon food collection. I’d rather a long wait time with the love & care they put into their food than something else. If you’re going to have a feeling about wait times and post a deceptive review then maybe Maccas is the place for you. Thanks again guys. So glad my partner took me here for the first time, and his second...
Read moreFantastic Tacos and Burritos, they offer 7 different types of protein options(6 different type of meats and 1 cactus vegetarian option). It was pleasantly surprised by how each different protein option is seasoned uniquely and taste different from one another. Papis Birria Tacos isn't like some of the other Mexican places which use the same seasonings for everything and different meats end up tasting the same with a different texture. Every protein option here has a unique flavour and the only thing in common is that they are all very juicy and tender.
Staff are very friendly but I think the only thing they can do better is to have a little more clarity. I tried ordering the Birria tacos but I wasn't aware Birria Tacos only comes with 1 singular protein option, after i ordered birria tacos I started to list the protein options I wanted to the cashier, both times I visited the place and ordered staff didn't say anything and just put my order through. Once I was served I received soft shell tacos. The first time I visited i assumed it was a misunderstanding and the second time I visited I asked the staff if there was some type of error as I was very certain I ordered Birria tacos and not Soft shell tacos, only then I was informed that birria only comes with 1 protein option and when I start to list protein options the staff always just put it down as soft shell tacos. Not a big deal but I think its good to have a little more clarity as I wasn't too educated about Mexican food and it does suck a little that both times I visited I wasn't able to try the Birria Tacos.
Overall would highly recommend as Mexican food here is amazing and very well cooked.
TIP: if you have a larger appetite, I would recommend the burritos over the tacos as for the hungrier crowd, 1 serving of tacos may...
Read moreI walked into this new spot in Haberfield with absolutely no expectations, as it’s only been open there a week. I ordered two dishes: the slow-cooked beef burrito and beef nachos.
Let’s start with the burrito. It was stuffed with tender, slow-cooked beef that had clearly been given the time and attention it deserved. Every bite was rich and flavourful, like they’d taken a slice of Mexico and wrapped it up just for me. The fillings were all perfectly balanced and the roll was toasted to perfection. I asked for extra chilli on the side and it was the right balance of flavour and heat. It was one of those meals that makes you forget you're sitting outside a food truck in Haberfield and not some cosy little taqueria in the heart of Mexico.
Now, onto the nachos. These weren’t your sad, soggy, standard Aussie nachos. No, these were crisp corn chips with the toppings on the side. The house made salsa was amazing, my only complaint was there wasn’t more of it. Next time I would order extra in the side. It was the kind of dish that’s perfect for sharing—unless you decide you’re not in the mood to share, which would be totally understandable.
To top it off the owners were really helpful, friendly and definitely putting a lot of love into their food. All in all, this place was a pleasant surprise. Authentic, satisfying, and well...
