As a long time goer of the original store in Hurstville - the benchmark had been set. I’ve been to Mortdale location twice , the first visit was shortly after they had opened in Mortdale.
On the first visit , we ordered all the usual typical dishes to see if the standard was still as good as Hurstville, whilst the food was the same the process of preparing food was different - they no longer have trolleys pushed around and instead each dish is steamed to order . 3 out of 6 dishes we ordered was still “cold” in the middle , we had to send them back for the kitchen to reheat .
Second visit was Saturday 18th Nov. Whilst the food was spot on this time , the service was dismal. Upon arrival (2 people) we stood around for a couple minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us and seat us - there were at least 4 vacant tables. Once sat down, we were left waiting for them to “re-furnish” the table with a new ticket to order - never came so we took it off a table next to us. Mind you the entire time the owner of the business was sat in-front of us sipping on his tea - clearly no care in the world for what’s happening on the floor. We had to ask twice for them to give us another plate of chilli sauce , the waitress’ seemed pretty flustered despite not being full house. Our food took a good 30-40 mins to come out as well even though there was no other orders going in ( we were probably one of the last table of the day at around 130pm).
I wish the business took customer service more seriously, as this recent poor experience means I probably wont be...
Read moreI didn't have a good experience again here, which makes me sad because I like this place, and I always liked it in Hurstville. We went for yum cha. We like the staff - they are friendly and accommodating, but I feel like the food has really gone downhill. The dumpling skins were very thick and there did not seem to be much filling inside. The Cheong Fun was mostly thick noodles and they go a bit hard and stiff when they cool down. We ordered egg tarts and watched as the table next to us (who ordered after us) get a table full of them and then we were told there were none left. I don't think we will be coming back for yum cha unfortunately, but I am willing to try dinner again there to give it another chance. Our Aussie guests were very happy because the staff spoke English to them and even cooked some items that weren't on the menu for them. But as a 'snobby Chinese person', I feel like there are better options for yum cha if you are willing to travel a bit further - Hurstville or Campsie.
Edit: The restaurant is right - we did get good service regardless of whether we were Chinese or Aussie. The staff are very good to all customers. But 20 minutes after we cancelled our egg tart order, the waitress walked around with egg tarts on a tray selling them to people in the restaurant, so they were not sold out, they were just given to the table next to us first. We will try dinner again as we are happy to give the restaurant...
Read moreNever coming back. Don’t bother with making a booking here on days that you would think you need a booking (such as Mother’s Day). We waited an hour just to be SEATED despite making a booking weeks in advance. When they had confirmed our booking upon arrival, I could see on their list that I was actually the first person to make a booking for this date and time. Yet we still had to wait one whole hour just to sit down, along with a massive crowd of other unhappy, confused, and hungry people who had also made bookings and were not getting seated. Everyone was in disbelief. We only got “seated” in the end because my mother started positioning herself at a table that was getting cleared and added an extra seat to the table herself so that it would fit us, who knows how much longer it would’ve taken otherwise?? No proper booking system whatsoever yet they claim to accept bookings. After confronting them that we’d been waiting too long, the manager used the excuse that he had to accept walk-ins because it’s Mother’s Day and he can’t turn people away. Well yeah that’s why we made a BOOKING. Either you don’t accept bookings or you don’t accept walk-ins, or at the very least, have the walk-ins wait in line, you don’t get to be greedy and have it all. Staff was entirely overwhelmed and service was also so slow as an obvious result. Food is average and definitely not worth a 1.5 hour wait. Won’t be missing this place 👋 母亲节绝对不要来...
