If you’re a fan of mouthwatering BBQ, juicy burgers, and creative cocktails, Surly’s American Tavern. American. Located in a funky, distressed-brick space adorned with vintage beer signs, the atmosphere alone sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. The moment you step inside, you’re immediately hit with the warm, inviting vibe—think retro-chic meets casual comfort, making it perfect for both a night out with friends or a laid-back dinner.

The food here is phenomenal. Let’s start with the BBQ—Surly’s absolutely nails it. From the perfectly charred ribs to the tender, slow-cooked brisket, every bite is a smoky, flavorful delight. The BBQ sauce is perfectly balanced—rich and tangy with just the right amount of sweetness. The sides are just as impressive, with crispy fries, creamy mac ‘n’ cheese, and a zesty coleslaw that all add that extra touch to the already stellar meat dishes. If you’re a true BBQ lover, this place will quickly become a favorite.

And then there are the burgers—pure bliss in a bun. Whether you opt for the classic cheeseburger or one of their signature creations, you can expect juicy, well-seasoned patties topped with fresh ingredients and decadent sauces. The buns are soft yet sturdy, holding up to all the deliciousness inside. Every bite is a perfect combination of savory, smoky, and satisfying. Trust me, if you’re hungry, you won’t be disappointed.

To wash all that incredible food down, you simply must try one of their cocktails. Surly’s has an impressive selection of drinks, with creative concoctions that complement the bold flavors of the food. The cocktails are expertly crafted, and each one brings its own unique twist. Whether you’re into something refreshing and citrusy or prefer a classic whiskey cocktail, there’s something to suit every palate.

The service at Surly’s is also top-notch. The staff are friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about the food they serve, which only adds to the overall experience. They’re more than happy to make recommendations, ensuring you have the best possible meal.

Surly’s is a gem, and I can’t recommend it enough. With its great food, vibrant atmosphere, and delicious drinks, it’s the ultimate spot for anyone craving authentic BBQ and burgers in a cool, casual setting. Whether you’re a foodie, cocktail enthusiast, or just looking for a fun night out, Surly’s delivers in every way. Five stars...

Surly’s American Tavern brings a slice of the American South to the heart of Sydney, and it does it with style. This bar and restaurant offers a casual yet lively atmosphere perfect for those who crave classic American comfort food, craft beers, and bourbon.

The ambiance at Surly’s is rustic and authentic, with dim lighting, wooden decor, and walls adorned with Americana memorabilia. It feels like stepping into a cozy dive bar somewhere in Nashville or New Orleans, with a friendly vibe and staff who are attentive and welcoming.

The food at Surly’s is the star of the show. The menu is packed with American favorites, from juicy BBQ ribs and smoked brisket to crispy fried chicken and loaded burgers. Their mac and cheese is cheesy and indulgent, and the BBQ platters are a meat-lover’s dream, perfect for sharing with friends. Portions are generous, and the flavors are rich, smoky, and satisfying. Surly’s also has an impressive selection of craft beers, whiskeys, and cocktails that complement the food perfectly.

One of the highlights at Surly’s is the live music and events, which add to the lively and energetic atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot for group outings, casual dates, or anyone looking to enjoy a night out with good food and a great vibe.

It can get busy, especially on weekends, so a reservation is recommended if you’re planning to dine in the evening.

Overall, Surly’s American Tavern is a gem for anyone in Sydney looking to enjoy a taste of American BBQ and comfort food in a fun, laid-back setting. Whether you’re there for the food, drinks, or atmosphere, Surly’s delivers a true American...

Location A bit of a walk away from most of the city's train stations, but very much worth it. My mates and I have been here on a number of occasions, and it's always a special treat for us.

First impressions The decor is American themed, they put a lot of effort into it! It's beautiful and all looks clean and well-thought out. It is SO warm inside.

Service Ordered online through QR code menus. Because I was with a big group, we used 2 phones to order. But only the orders from one of the phones ended up coming, so there was a mix-up. We had to flag down a waiter twice to get the food for the other half of the table out. It was tough because there weren't many staff available on the floor (upstairs, that we could see) and the place is pretty loud, so you do have to raise your voice for that (-1 star for me because of that, sorry!)

Ambience Conversation has to be had above normal speaking volume because of the music, you can only really hear the person to the immediate right/left of you if you're in a group. Otherwise very lively and spirited restaurant environment

Food To die for. The BBQ plate never disappoints. I generally don't love meat, but this place is an exception. Also, I didn't expect the tacos to be so good!! Amazing. Their cornbread is so delicious, and their coleslaw is nice and not too rich! Perfect as sides. Tater tots were also really...

Went there on a Monday. Won't recommend to go right when they're open. We ordered a burger and bbq box. Burger was decent, my partner was happy about it. But the bbq box is not worth for $35 when i get there. Mac n cheese are your typical mac n cheese in a grocery box, felt like not homemade. The mustard bbq sauce with it, taste more like a vinaigrette, very sour. The brisket that i was waiting for and wanted to try was so dry. No juiciness on it. I knew it was not fresh and was a leftover from a day before. The corn was good though as well as the coleslaw. Coleslaw was fresh atleast on that box. And I like the cornbread. Didn't want to complain about it since it was my partners birthday and didn't wanna ruin the night. The drinks were nicely presented and taste good. The servers were nice as well. Food, i don't know. Would love to have a good juicy brisket and not dry tasteless leftover. I am a chef as well, been to america and I was excited to try because I miss a good brisket taste like from america, my partner was excited as well as his American. But I'm glad he had a good burger he was happy about. I was just disappointed on mine.

. We did not enjoy the meat. Like at all. In fact we gave our leftovers to a homeless man on the way home. We found it to be flavourless, apart from a Smokey flavour. To the point we actually couldn’t even taste meat. After hyping ourselves up, not eating all day to fit in as much as we could, we were left quite unsatisfied. The coleslaw was worse than a prepackaged one from Woolies. On the other hand, the mash and gravy was awesome. The Mac and cheese was great (hopefully it’s homemade cause I can compare it to the Kraft packet one level of so bad for you it taste awesome). The cocktails = AMAZING. The highlight of this place was the atmosphere and staff. The staff are attentive and super kind. The other thing I didn’t enjoy was how quickly the food comes out, we were in and out within 40 minutes which to me isn’t really a dining experience but more of a fast food. Wouldn’t go back, but if we did, we would get something else off the menu. For $180 spent (even with 2 for 1 cocktails) I would say we’re left rather bitter.

50 dollars for this pitiful platter. Where do I start? The amount of meat. For similar or cheaper price points there are plenty of places that offer more. The brisket. Tough. Had to legitimately try and hack at it with my knife. Dry. The drumsticks. Two dry drumsticks that were accompanied by a bit of thigh. Makes you wonder if the chef ate the rest? The thigh is actually almost as tough as the brisket. Which is ridiculous. How you overcook thighs is baffling. Dry thighs. The pulled pork is just salty. There's no other flavour. The pickles. I don't know if these are made in house but no crispness whatsoever. I've had better pickles from a Macca's cheeseburger. The link (sausage) was average. Nothing outstanding. I'd have to say my favourite part of this meal was the cornbread. Which was ok. If you're looking for a meat fix, go to any pub and ask for a steak. Or a kebab joint. For a lot cheaper and cooked on average a lot better. Actually disappointed with how tough that brisket is. No
