The Eight Visit Update 16/6/2023 It's been one year since I attended a wedding banquet. Nothing has changed, in using the quality of food and service. Well done. ________________________ Visited on 11/6/2022 It is a very big restaurant within a shopping complex, and I am very impressed with the management, the waiting staff that serves us, and last but not least the food. I come for a wedding banquet. Trying to get to the restaurant is a great challenge if you drive around the area. Basement parking is available, and parking fee is waived after 6 pm if the ticket is stamped by the restaurant. Although I am not involved with the reception preparation, I was informed that the management took every effort to accommodate the customers' requests, seeing that the venue setting, colour coordination, and menu are in perfect order. The waiting staff is friendly and attentive. Clean bowls are supplied after each course, and I jokingly say that what a trouble we created for the kitchen staff, and she replies that it helps to keep her emploed! The quantity of food is excellent. It suits diners who prefer less salt (although I do not belong to that category). There are great variety of sauces for the different dishes. As a chicken (eating) lover, I find the crispy chicken is a bit of a let down. After all the thumbs-up, I have to say my piece of negatives. The restaurant is packed to the rim, and obviously many people use the toilets. They do need attention to keep the floor dry and free from used paper. PS I have no financial interest nor receive financial benefit from the restaurant.

When we eat at yum cha place I never expect any good service but this place actually not bad, some of them can speak english really well. I left my hat when we leave, they kept it for me. The food was really nice as well, some of them was average quality but some of them surprisingly nice. Here is the order list: - The pork shumai is dry and not really yummy. - The prawn rice noodle was average, the prawns are really small as well. - The prawn toast is amazing and crunchy, we got it hot and fresh. - The mango pancake is meh, the mango are sour and the cream was not sweet at all. - The mango pudding is a big surprise though. The pudding is silky and the milk is sweetly tasty. I wish I order another one of those cause we fighting for it 😅 - The salted egg custard bun is really yummy as well must try In conclusion the food was not bad, some hit and miss. What I really love about this place is the strategic location. I live in the CBD so it really easy for me to get here. Located in market city lv 3, but beware this place gets really busy especially in the weekend morning. We come before this place even open and we see people already line up outside. The good thing is this place is huge so we still get table without queuing.

The problem with yum cha these days is the inconsistency in food. The chefs move around and what could be good one day is very mediocre the next. The Eight is not immune to this either, however most of their dishes are quite good albeit a little pricey. My measure of a good yum cha restaurant are the two staples: Sui Mai (Pork dumpling) and Har Gau (Prawn dumpling). Sui Mai - very bland flavour and mixed with a processor when the pork is meant to be roughly chopped for texture. Har Gau - chunks of prawn and well seasoned although could be more bamboo shoots. The over zealous trolley ladies can be a bit over bearing but some of them do mean well. You just need to know when to say 'no'. Overall, the service is good for a yum cha place which means, the tea pot is filled regularly, the dishes are cleared and you could get the attention of the waiter to order other things. My biggest gripe would still be the price as it seems I am paying significantly different prices on each visit but I can see that the prices are now displayed at the counter and on the bill. I guess too many people complained at the bill lottery that it The Eight yum cha!

Where do I start? - Food was an absolute rip off, no menu on the table so you’ve no idea how much you’re paying for things. That should be a warning sign. $24 for a pot of tea. They charge you per person at the table at $4 a pop. - Food is really pushed on you as soon as you arrive. It feels like an ambush. I think we got the dregs where we were seated too because most of the hot dishes were luke warm/cold. - We were seated beside the crab tanks and the stench of fish was horrendous. - Aside from hot dishes being cold they just didn’t taste that good. I’ve had much better yumcha elsewhere. Some of the pork dumplings were pink on the inside which is concerning. There was so much food left over on our table when we left which I hate to see but some of it was just really average. - staff were pushy and rude and didn’t take kindly to their pricing being questioned. Buyer beware. They clearly prey on people who’ve never been there before! Definitely won’t be back. Yuck.

Like most big Chinese restaurants, it serves two purposes, yumcha during the day and normal dining at night. Here are my experiences: YUMCHA - one of the best in town, with a big range of dishes that goes beyond the usual prawn dumplings, pork buns and chicken feet. Some less common dishes on offer are prawn paste steamed squid, red date cake and (one giant) seafood dumpling in a tasty broth. Overall, good range and all dishes are done quite well. DINNER - we came here for my dad's birthday and ordered many dishes, what we found is that the dishes were quite one dimensional, that is, meat was just served straight up with not much else on the plate. The outcome was a somewhat unbalanced meal with a lack of veges. We also waited ah hour for our fried rice, then later on I found a number of items incorrectly added to our bill. Overall, the restaurant was bright and clean and food was done well. But dinner here can get quite expensive and remember to check your bill.

There was no menu and pricing. As soon as we had been assigned a table, those servers quickly pushed their carts towards our table and wanted us to make the decision to take which dim sum. Frankly speaking, it was quite scary this kind of pushy. We been to many dim sum places in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and other countries but have never experienced such a hard push. We seem not allowed to order what we want to eat but rather take whatever items remain in the pushing cart. Taste wise, it was awful. Usually, authentic Cantonese dim sum should be small, unique, and nice outlook. But dim sum here seems localised and big in size. E.g. the authentic prawn dumpling I ate in hongkong only consisted of prawn with flavourul thin skin, but the version here stuffed with meat and big size and skin was too thick tasteless. E.g. the siewmai here also too meaty and lack in flavourful. 1 star The chicken leg was ok, at least. 2 stars Chee cheong fun was lack of flavour. 1 star
