I use to stay at the Adina near Central when I had to catch a countrylink train, I was beside myself when they shut it down. My husband use to go to The Great Southern Hotel for lunch when he worked in Sydney years back, so I thought I would give it ago & I wasn't disappointed! This is an extremely great location & dare say even better then the Adina. The room was really excellent room for the price I paid, was easy to get to & the fact you can get food there was a bonus... I was extremely tired by the time I got to the Hotel. The were helpful, polite & kind... the bathroom was so clean & shower spacious, with good hot water. The telly was a bit limited, but at least it was there. The bed (I got a twin single room) ... was the most comfortable I've ever had staying in a hotel. The room was well set put, very clean & didn't feel poky, it was a very good size. I really enjoyed my one night there & it was basically just across the road & I was able to catch the Explorer train so easy. I was able to get a good meal down stairs & while waiting for it have a drink from the bar... no alcohol is allowed in the rooms, but was able to take my meal to my room to have privately... but really I realised while waiting for it, that I would have felt very comfortable eating it down stairs in the restaurant. The hotel has so much history & has a little display with photos ect... of its past, the antiques were beautiful. It would have been nice to have had some bottled water in the bar fridge. But I have to say... this will now be my go to new place to stay when in Sydney. You can really see why their rating is so high. It really is that good & I highly recommend it! Thankyou to The Great Southern Hotel for a wonderful experience & room at such a...

The location is excellent. An easy walk to Central and Haymarket Light Rail stop. The Thomas St entrance is basically right at Haymarket, and Market City, and quick walk to Chinatown. Plenty of easy food options, especially East Asian. Ditch Uber Eats and walk, it’s worth the exploration. The room was clean and cozy, and very basic. The TV only has free to air channels, so bring your devices if you wish to watch anything decent. I was in room 626, so whilst the view was into another room across a void, it was free from any city noise, including the bar and restaurants on the ground floor.||Now the not so good. The biggest issue, for me, was the pathetic water pressure and fixed shower head. This made it difficult to have a good shower. I’ve stayed at a similarly priced hotel in a similar location, Town Hall, which even had a better shower experience in its cheapest room, with decent water pressure and hand held showers heads. The lack of daily servicing, even at almost $600 for 3 nights, just reeks of greed and cost cutting, by the Singaporean syndicate who owns the hotel, or Acostay who manages the hotel. They actually charge extra for daily servicing, pathetic. This is 2025 and daily servicing, at no extra charge, is an expectation in Australia. Yes I do understand it’s a first world problem, but these little things do make a difference to a stay.||In saying the above, I will return for...

I’ve visited Sydney from interstate a dozen times now, and this was by far the worst hotel I’ve stayed at over here. I had booked this more so because I was extremely tight on time (same day booking) and the other hotels I’m familiar with were already booked out. So it was rather embarrassing when my 2 other guests didn’t believe me when I told them this was indeed a 4 star hotel. Had to pull out the booking confirmation to prove it! I don't blame them, I started thinking it myself. It was all the expected of a typical lower star hotel - dirty sheets, unclean carpet, terrible soundproofing, cigarette stains and odour, sink drainage not working.. and so on. Just very unpleasant and disappointing for the money paid. Perhaps out of their control but there was also a strong cigarette stench coming from what we believed was a neighbouring room. Alongside very loud s*x noises from a neighbouring room during the day... Mind you this was only a 1 night stay on a weekday for us.

I’m rating this hotel a 2/5 ONLY because all the staff I spoke to were all very kind and professional. I also felt bad that they got verbally abused by a drunk/mentally ill (?) man in the lobby. It’s a pity the hotel itself doesn’t reflect the service from the staff. I wouldn’t ever return here, and urge people to consider booking elsewhere if you’re truly after a 4...

This hotel is in a great location and is quite comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Sydney. Rooms are a decent size, adequate linen and amenities. I stayed here with my friends Dirk and Andrew Bogden in early 2019 we stepped out of the elevator on our floor and all we could smell was the stench of death. It turned out someone had died and we could smell it. We asked for a free breakfast in return for having to deal with the stench of death. They wouldn’t even give us a free meal and in fact denied that there was even a smell or a body. There were two police officers standing outside the room that the stench of death was coming from, so they weren’t fooling anyone. They moved all of the furniture out and put some kind of noisy machine in there. It was an upsetting experience but the room was otherwise comfortable, entirely adequate for Andrew Bogden to stretch his back in the dark. Once again we did not receive free breakfast. Edit: In response to the response of the owner I would like to say that it was at the start of 2019. This is likely not an issue anymore. Also it was a three star review which is not bad, it would have been at least four even with the stench, had I received free breakfast.

I had a wonderful first time visit to this hotel. It was also my first international trip. From arrival, staff and everyone i interacted with were kind and courteous. They let me check in early which was a lifesaver after 22 hours of flying! The room was basic, but very clean. I had a wonderful view of the city from the 8th floor. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great! There are a ton of restaurants and stores in the area, which is helpful. Public transport is right outside the entrance, across the street. I would give 5 stars, but a couple things that dropped it. First, it was quite warm while I was in town, and the A/C could only be changed by 2 degrees or so. Sometimes it felt a tad stuffy. The TV was great, but all the channels are the same, some just HD and others listed as not. Lastly, I opted not to pay for the faster wifi, but even on the basic, it would randomly disconnect. All in all, I would ABSOLUTELY return to this hotel. The value was unmatched!

The location is terrific. Just a few steps away from the tram, trains (Central Station), and buses. It’s also just in front of Market City and near Chinatown so finding good restaurants is not a problem as there are a lot of establishments offering asian cuisines in the vicinity. We can also easily walk towards different Sydney Attractions like QVB, Anzac Memorial, St. Mary’s Cathedral, and Darling Harbour. I would highly suggest that you try to walk to these places so that you can better grasp how these spots are connected to one another. By doing this, I realized how concentrated the Sydney attractions are. In terms of the hotel facilities, the room is very clean & spacious ,and the supplies are sufficient. Despite being an old building, all of its facilities are working and offered a comfortable stay for the whole week. The staffs are also friendly and polite. I would recommend this for anyone planning to visit Sydney.
