Edited to add owner's response: Wouldn't recommend it. Been here a few times and each time it's worse than the last. The mattress is so thin you can feel the ground. The bathrooms are gross and the showers are cramped and have black mould on the surfaces. The showers don't even work half the time, the water pressure is non existent, the toilet stalls are insanely small and some seats are straight up missing. The building in general has a mouldy smell. The pods are okay but half the features in them are not working, they're not maintained at all and the bedding is often stained. The elevator buttons don't work properly half the time. Save your money, go anywhere else. Whoever is running this establishment clearly has no love for it, things aren't looked after properly and the charge is way too much for staying somewhere so uncomfortable at every corner.
EDIT 15/08/25: I got a response from the owner that basically cements how poorly run this place is.
Owner: Firstly, there is no black mould in our bathrooms. The black areas you mention are black grout deliberately used to protect against water leakage and maintain the integrity of the tiles.
My response: The facilities are not cleaned properly then. How can there be so much grout all over then? It's not impossible to get rid of. What about the mouldy smells people are complaining about? No word on the cramped cubicles and the water pressure being non existent then? A few months ago I was using the showers and had no pressure, a month or so later I stayed again and the pressure was a dribble.
Owner: Secondly, all our capsule beds are properly sanitized and made fresh after each checkout. Housekeeping staff clean and disinfect the capsules thoroughly before making the beds with fresh linen, and these are then double-checked by a manager to maintain quality standards.
My response: The last time I was in a capsule it stunk of marijuana smoke residue. Maybe triple check next time. I saw a girl once who had just checked in having to ask to change sheets because she had blood stains on hers. I had stains on my mattress too when I first checked in on my last visit. Things happen and sure stuff gets missed but denying the reality that you're not maintaining this as perfectly as you'd like to believe doesn't help you here.
Owner: We also note that you posted a positive review of a competitor on the same day you submitted this negative review of our property. This raises concerns that your comments may not reflect a genuine guest experience but rather a fraudulent or biased review.
My response: what a strange comment. I assure you that I am a real person and I have stayed at your hotel many times, and have watched the quality of the place decrease over that time. If you want to pretend I'm making this up and I'm making fraudulent reviews because I happen to review two capsule hotels on the same day, that's your own loss to your integrity, not mine. It is no benefit to you or your business to deny the criticism and call it fake. You have a pot of gold here, no other hotel in the city is like yours. But the way it is treated now is shameful. I used to really enjoy staying at SpaceQ until recently when the quality just plummeted. Your competitor has facilities that are actually honestly well maintained and spacious, but only after a huge renovation. Also, no mould. ALSO, it is cheaper than your poorly run establishment. Big bonus, that. It doesn't feel like a struggle to stay in, but SpaceQ feels punishing to stay in now. Sleeping is a struggle on the thin mattress. The bathrooms are gross and unusable. The whole place smells. The elevator isn't working properly. Half the capsule functions don't work. Who are you kidding? What do you think people deserve to stay in when they come to your hotel? Is it fair that just because you don't charge high rates and aren't running a high rate hotel that you can skimp on the quality? This place has so much potential, but clearly is in the...
Read moreI am writing this review as I just finished a 3 night stay at this location after visiting Sydney for a friends birthday trip.
Pros The price. You can’t argue that it is very affordable, especially when hotel rooms are can be anywhere from 2.5-5 times the price. Receptionist. Very friendly elderly gentleman who was helpful and assisted me when getting a new pod when the pod I was booked for originally had a fault. -Location. You are in Haymarket, which is a close walk to central station and a close walk to Chinatown, which means easy access to both the light rail and the trains. Storage. You are assigned a locker along with your pod, which is enough to fit a backpack and a small luggage bag. (Normal sized backpack and a 30L luggage bag for reference) as well as a smaller space for valuables. Some pod aspects. Having a lockable sleeping space definitely gave me a peace of mind, and for me, I had plenty of space and lighting when required.
Before I get to the cons, just keep note, you will be sharing a space with other people. If other people are gross or not good, this will hamper your experience.
Alright, now onto the important stuff.
Cons Cleanliness. This is one of the two big cons I had with this place. When I got into my second pod, it was not clean. Still dirty from the last person who was in it. On top of that, the bathrooms where definitely less clean then what I was comfortable with (lots of grime on the walls and in the tiles). I straight up avoided using the toilets there if I could and avoided using the showers as, when I was about to use them, I could hear someone hacking up mucus and spitting it on the floor. Very disgusting. Which surprises me, cause the facilities are cleaned daily (I saw it cleaned by the same lady multiple days) but it just is not done very well. Pod comfort. My second big issue is the comfort of the pod itself. I did not get ONE NIGHT of solid sleep while I was there. This was due to both the pod having 2 vents for a fan (very small and not very strong) instead of A/C which led to me getting extremely hot on nights of 22C weather. And the (mat)tress. Very thin, and not supportive at all. As someone who is 5’4 and 110KG. I felt like I was sleeping on the floor. Very unpleasant. Some other gripes include Lack of space to put clothes while in the shower (a reason why my mate would not use the shower either) Toilet space. I am not joking when I say for 2/3 stalls on level 1, your feet would be poking out of the stall floor. Literally no leg room whatsoever. Appearance. A lot of chipboard, exposed wiring/panels. Ground floor is also where the garbage is which is very off-putting. Noise. The pods are not soundproof. If someone is speaking or coughing or snoring, it will pierce though the other pods.
To summarise, I can’t recommend this. Yes, it is super cheap, but you get what you pay for. This location is in serious need of renovation and a redo. Particularly on its cleanliness and...
