Watsons Bay Cafe — Restaurant in Sydney

Visited this Cafe yesterday and I am shook. Placed a take away order for a two meals and 30 minutes later we could see they were busy but to my complete shock while we were waiting one of the waiters walked outside with a man who was wearing Thongs and had a cut on the inside of his foot with blood all over it. She sat on the bench outside and he put his foot up to her where she used a cloth to wipe away the blood, no gloves on and no anti bacterial. Once she had wiped away the blood on his foot, she scrunched up the bloody cloth in her hands and proceeded to walk inside collecting dirty plates on her way. I watched as she cleared the plates inside and put items in the bin. From here she collected more dirty plates from a vacant table and then proceeded to take a bowl of chips to a table outside placing her thumb into the bowl to carry it! By this time we had waited long enough and decided after seeing this to cancel our order. As I was waiting in line, she came out holding boxes with our order. I knew the food would be fine and contamination free as the chef had prepared the food however when I told her politely what I had just seen her do without disinfecting her hands she quickly apologise and ran back inside to wash them. As I was walking away with my husband she chased after me to tell me she had rinsed some plates and this was therefore sufficient in her eyes after touching a foot with blood on it .... it's not and I explained this to her at which point she said to me " people should be more kind and understanding" .... I am sorry?! Kind and understanding to having hands that have touched a dirty foot and bodily fluid near my food!?! This is basic food safety, basic hygiene !! I have no idea what diseases may have been on that foot or in his blood! Next time, don't turn a situation where you have not met food safety regulations around onto someone who has simply pointed out a breach, it does not matter how busy you are. Food safety is...

I'll give this place 3 of 5 stars because it was on the plus side of mediocre. I'll start by saying I'd definitely look for another place in the area before coming back. But here's a breakdown of my experience: The menus looked very cheap but the food was mostly alright. My friends and I ordered a beef burger, a chicken burger, another beef burger (gluten free) and a salmon salad. The beef and chicken burgers came with totally different bread than the picture showed so that was an unfortunate surprise. I feel like the staff could have just notified us of that, as with the fact that they didn't have any dressing or capers that were supposed to come with the salad. That being said, the burgers were pasaable but the salad was the saddest you ever seen. The greens were definitely not fresh. At roughly $18 a head we weren't expecting much, but at least food better than we would make at home so this was a disappointment. And the fact that they couldn't serve chips (fries) at all was a letdown as there was no indication that they were unavailable. A family of 3 stopped for a lunch on 28 Dec 2023.

Ordered chicken salad, Philly cheese steak, pancake, mozzarella sticks, and a jag of water.

Had to wait for water for 6 minutes - how hard can it be to bring it first. The food was not served for another 40 minutes, even though it was not particularly busy at that time and dishes were fairly common.

Chicken salad ended up being very salty and with few pieces of chicken.

Mozzarella sticks were over-fried with charred cheese on the outside and nothing inside. When asked about whether the sticks meant to be 'empty', another serving was prepared, this time a bit less over-cooked, with drops of mozzarella on the outside, so the dish was just empty shells of deep-fried oily batter.

Luckily, Philly steak had more cheese and was real highlight of the whole lunch.
