I'm lucky to have a place like Wok Flavour just down the hill from me.
We love cooking and are not ones to order out to survive but when we get home from work and just can't be damned getting something ready for ourselves or warm up the dinners we have cooked on the weekend - grabbing some good old suburban Aussie Chinese dishes from Wok Flavour is a viable option.
You won't find anything that fancy - as I've mentioned I describe its dishes "Aussie Chinese" those classics that appeal to all - young and old - like sweet and sour pork, Mongolian beef, honey chicken, beef and black bean (etc, etc) or if you are daring - Szechuan chili beef or sambol seafood (for some sophistication)!
But unlike the suburban Aussie Chinese takeaway from the '70s or the '80s (yes, I do remember those), I don't think I've yet come across any baby sweetcorn in any of the dishes and they don't leave that relic from the past - MSG dry mouth, either.
Fried dishes (such as the honey chicken), have a light batter and Wok Flavour is good enough to separate the honey sauce in a container and the chicken in a paper bag so that it's still crisp when you get it home (how many times have you ordered such a dish to have it soggy and falling apart when you get home)?
Don't expect Chinese wow food - get on the bus and get down to Haymarket if you want that - but for decent Aussie Chinese from a former working class gewilo suburb like Balmain - Wok Flavour fills the tummy and isn't savage on...
Read moreThe size of the portions that were delivered to us was beyond unacceptable, it was a complete scam. The price for what was offered is just a complete and utter rip off. To top it off $70 worth of food was ordered with only half being delivered after an hour and half with the second half of our food to be delivered by a different person. After nearly 2 hours waiting on the full order, we ended up going to the restaurant to try and get the rest of our food. When getting to the restaurant, there was numerous delivery drivers waiting with the woman working there offering the excuse that they were not sure what we had or hadn’t ordered. We got no communication from the restaurant to figure out what was the correct order, it was simply just forgotten about. Little to no apology was offered with the reasoning being that a lot of orders came through at the same time. This was a complete shame as the food was quite nice but the portions and customer service was nothing other...
Read moreA real gem of authentic Cantonese cuisine. The owner himself is passionate about food and homestyle Cantonese/ Chinese dishes you can’t typically find in restaurants here. Apart from their standard menu, eg Shandong Fried Chicken 山東雞 (with a delicious sauce) cooked to perfection, you can try preordering custom dishes, especially seafood ones. We’ve been loyal customers for 7 years, ordering almost weekly. Apart from our family favourites like rainbow beef (wagyu), sweet and sour pork, stir fried beef with flat noodles (乾炒牛河)etc, we also sometimes ask for stir fried (whole) prawns with tomato sauce, stir fried scallops, steamed fish, lobster with noodles and some other home cooked dishes I miss from home. Highly...
