This was my second visit to the Lost Captain and I was really looking forward to having another great experience, so decided to take my husband here for lunch, as I had raved about it so much. Such a dreadful experience this time. The mojito cocktail my husband ordered was tasteless and certainly not worth the cost, our main course was dreadful. We were told the barramundi was the fish of the day and was a whole fish to share. We were shocked at the size of the fish, which was the size of a small trout. There was hardly any flesh on it, and what little there was, was certainly wasn't worth the $70 that they were charging. Even the presentation left much to be desired and the flesh was mushy and tasteless. We sent our main course back and requested the cost be removed from our bill. We only ate the cos leaf salad and the rosemary fries. The dessert was also challenging. I ordered the chocolate mousse which the waitress should have mentioned needed to have the outer chocolate coating smashed before trying to consume it. I had to turn the whole thing upside down to be able to eat it as it was totally frozen. To pay $14 or $16 for these desserts is a bit of a farce given their sizes. My husband had the panacotta which was decorated with watermelon pearls - the combination certainly didn't go! All in all a very disappointing and costly meal, considering we only had a couple of drinks, the cos leaf salad, rosemary fries and the...
Read moreSad to give such a low score for such a wonderful addition to Huonville. The space itself, especially the garden area, is the perfect place to sit around and enjoy the afternoon or evening. The beer and drink selection is the best in Huonville, if not all of the Huon Valley. All of the staff were friendly and made me feel welcomed. These things alone warrant five stars, but unfortunate for me, I'm vegetarian.
The first folly was finding out that the only hot chips on the menu are cooked in duck fat. I would come here every week if I could just order some hot chips with a beer. The two of us ordered the sweet potato, carrot, and mushroom share dishes. Each had a lot of potential but we left feeling a bit dejected. The flavours were either too sweet or too salty, or both? We felt like each was slightly undercooked, though maybe that was intentional. And the portions were quite small, so much so that we grabbed potato cakes from the petrol station next door and felt that made up for the lackluster food.
Looking at their lunch menu, it seems like there may be better vego options at play, but we are hesitant to go back for anything other than a few pints, which are genuinely worth the trip. I'm hoping they respond to this and the other vegetarians complaining as this could easily be the number 1 place I'd recommend to friends...
Read moreIn the heart of Huonville, where the Huon River curves lazily past rolling green hills, there’s a place that feels like it’s been waiting for you all along. The Lost Captain—a pub with the soul of an old homestead and the kind of warmth you’d expect from a roaring fire and a genuine welcome. It’s unpretentious yet elegant, a place where stories flow as easily as the local Pinot.
That fire? It’s more than a centerpiece; it’s a promise. The warmth it throws off is mirrored in the faces behind the bar—charming, sharp, and disarmingly knowledgeable. You could spend hours here, sipping on a glass of Pinot Noir that somehow tastes like it was plucked from the very vines framing the view, as the staff make you feel like you’ve been a regular for years.
And that view—oh, that view. From where I sat, the river stretched out like a painter’s muse, every angle a postcard-worthy glimpse of Tasmania’s untouched beauty. The zones here, each offering a unique vantage point, make you feel like you’re part of something bigger: the land, the water, the history. It’s all here, quietly waiting to be rediscovered.
The Lost Captain doesn’t shout its greatness—it doesn’t need to. It whispers it, like a story told by the fire on a cold night. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself here, lean...
