Double Eight Chinese Restaurant — Restaurant in Victoria

Im not going back here again which is a shame because my meal was ok, I enjoyed it, but for my single meal of prawns and rice it was $35. This place is far from fine dining and certainly not worth that (one meal, no drink). The menu price and what I paid were different. When I went to pay they added on an additional $4 surcharge- apparently to ask for “only broccoli” in a prawn and veggie stir fry cost me $3 extra and having prawns cost me $1 extra...what?? Why have a prawn meal on the menu at x price and then when you go to pay they say all prawn dishes have a surcharge??? I spoke to another local who also said they’d been overcharged at this place too, being ask to pay more than the menu price with surprise surcharges. Not impressed and will...

This is a classic country Chinese restaurant. It hasn’t changed in over 30 years. While the food is what you’d expect and quite delicious, the ambience is not. It’s bright and confronting with lots of people waiting for their takeaway staring at you while you eat.

They could literally do two simple things and I would guarantee, every table would be full. Turn down the lighting and add some small decor to add ambience.

Some suggestions… central table with a vase and a large flower display. Some cheap Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling in the centre of the restaurant would look gorgeous. Reduce the amount of halogen lights and add a candle to each table. It would make the place so much more inviting.

When we ordered our food, we were the only people seated. The entrees came out and they were all quite bland and tasted the same and the prawn crackers were stale. While waiting for our mains to come out 4 other tables worth of people came in, ordered and had started receiving their meals. We waited 35mins and NOTHING came out. Asked the young waiter to find out where our food was and was told the cook had forgotten our meals. No apology from the cook or discount for the inconvenience.
