Wanting to try new venue so I went there with family and friend last Saturday and unfortunately the overall experience was a let down. Although we greeted and seated promptly but took the waiter a while to come and take our order. We ordered 2x seafood platter, steak sandwich and eggs on toast for food. 2x coffee and 1x sparkling for drinks.
Took a while for the food to be served although it wasn’t busy. Steak sandwich and eggs on toast were average. Can’t go wrong with such simple dishes. But they did horribly wrong with the seafood platter which consist of Singapore soft shell crab, fried squid, grill prawn, fried bao and some condiments like mayo, pickles and chutneys.
Let’s start with their interpretation of Singaporean chilli crab. It was a super salty fried soft shell crab. Very generous with the salt indeed. Nothing like the original where you get the Singaporean chilli sauce with the crabs. Lastly what do I do with the fried bao? Normally the bao is to go with the chilli sauce. But since there is none, what am I gonna do with it. Make my own sandwich with the condiments? Really? The bao was rock hard too. I could easily imagine the chef has accidentally fried a couple pumice rocks just for fun. Imagine if they serve those to Gordon Ramsey. I’m sure it will become a viral memes.
Waiter came and asked about the food. We told him about the seafood platter. He was apologetic... kinda... and offered if we want anything else. But we decline as we were done at that time. Since we don’t want anything else, he promised to adjust the bills for us instead.
So I went to the cashier to settle the bill but unsurprisingly nothing was adjusted. Can’t be bother to bring it up and being look down or thinking I wanting to take advantage of the situation. So I paid full and left.
1 star for the food but gave 2 stars for being greeted and seated almost...
Read moreMy partner and I had our wedding reception at Hangout on Hay in January 2024. It was an amazing day, and in no small part due to the work of Kirat and his team.
We had a lunchtime cocktail reception with a grazing board and small and substantial canapes, served at different intervals throughout the day. We also had a doughnut tower instead of a cake. The doughnuts were purchased from elsewhere, and Kirat created a very aesthetic doughnut tower atop a wine barrel! Kirat was extremely flexible during the planning stages, allowing us to taste and order the wines we wanted, as well as helping us to create a menu that was mostly vegetarian and catered for different dietary requirements. Kirat also assisted us to plan the layout of the venue for the day and really brought our vision of a fun daytime wedding reception to life.
The team were attentive and friendly throughout the day, constantly serving drinks and food. The food was excellent and plentiful and received lots of praise from our guests.
I highly recommend Hangout on Hay for anyone planning an event or function. Our wedding reception was incredibly fun and exactly what we had wanted....
Read moreI really want the whole Subi vibe back in town but this place let me down badly. We were greeted by a guy who had no smile on his face and service was a bit slow too. We ordered 2 seafood platers (do not order this as it is a disaster!!!) and stake sandwich and one of breaky menus. The spiking wine I ordered was flat with far less bubbles and coffee was average. The worst part is the food. It was not seafood flater worth $28 to start with. A couple of burnt rock hard bao bun with small prawns, few s&p squid and extremely salty softshrll crabs ( they said its Singaporean chilli crab but no sauce but deep fried one). Not near the worth of $28. We finished our meal and obviously left all crabs on the plate.... The guy came to our table and asked how was the meal. We talked about the salty crab and he said he will not charge full price for the seafood plater. BUT GUESS WHAT! They still charge full price.... Neither professional nor friendly. Never go back and you lost me. I have been drinking a water none stop as it was that salty and feel like licking himalayas salt...
