The Opern Café is a true jewel in Graz, right next to Next Liberty venue and the Light Sword (Lichtschwert) and of course only some meters away from the famous Grazer Opera House, which the Opern Café has its name from. This Café is a Grand Café, meaning elegant, stylish, and comfortable, a combination which is hard to find. The staff is friendly and represents the spirit of a Grand Café and so does the interior, which is light and colorful in an elegant way. The high ceiling contributes to the atmosphere of grandeur, since this Café is built into one of the well-restored old buildings in old town Graz.
This leads to the next point. The location of the Opern Café is great, since its central location next to the main street promenade of Graz, the Grazer Herrengasse, makes this place a perfect spot to explore the city's secrets.
The food is great here at the Opern Café ranging from breakfast over snacks and meals to desserts. I had a Verlängerter Café with an Opern Toast, a warm brown bread toast with ham, bacon, melted cheese, onions and sweet pepper. And the other time I had a Café Melange and a Punschkrampfen, this very Austrian sugar-coated (pink) dessert with rum filling. Yummy.

Read moreVery attentive staff at arrival, incredibly fast and proper, good portion size and excellent quality as well as taste. We ordered the breakfast for two and the étagère was decadent and delicious, through and through, while offering a great variety of tastes, from sweet to savoury. The coffee and the cocoa served were rich and delightful, most certainly set apart from everyday brands by their subtlety, while still providing full flavour profiles.
My only point of critique is, that the order of a second coffee dragged on and initially was once ignored, then forgotten by another waiter. In context of the immense workload and constant influx of customers, I would, however, consider that a mute point, especially since the waiters immediately rectified the issue and were both apologetic and charming while doing so. The knives could also be sharper, as a side note.
To end on a high note, I had my personal best baked beans here, as well as käsekrainer. There are subtle twists to many old classics served up here, and they are served swiftly and with a smile.
With that being said, I am looking forward to our next visit,...
Read moreThe atmosphere is great. Although the place was packed it wasn’t loud at all. There are a few desserts offered right as you step into the cafe. They all looked quite tempting however I didn’t see any options for people with dietary restrictions in the display but they might have some on the menu anyhow. Keep that in mind. Someone in our group wanted to have a bite to eat and after requesting an item of the menu was told they no longer serve lunch which we completely understand, however, the server neither suggested anything else nor stuck around for her to state what she wanted to have instead of the lunch menu item. All together a good experience with some...
