Gastwirtschaft Schilling — Restaurant in Vienna

With my fresh broken German ready to face reality, I decided it was time to venture deeply in the austrian food culture. Everyone seemed to love Kaiserschmarrm served here, so it was a perfect excuse to dine in.

I was coming alone on a Sunday afternoon without a reservation, but I was warmly welcomed and immediately seated. The menu features basically the complete "austrian dishes starter pack", so I would recommend it from a visitor's perspective.

I managed to order a Zwiebelrostbraten. The portion was quite generous. The beef needed not knife as tender as it was, and the potatoes worked well sucking the hearty gravy. To be fair, it was a bit too salty, but not enough to be unpleasant. Before, getting rid of the main dish, I ordered the iconic Kaiserschmarrm for dessert. Note that it takes around 20 minutes to be prepared, since they make it from scratch to each customer. Soon the vainilla smell propagated through the restaurant. Minutes later, the immense pan came to my table. It was warm, fluffly, sweet-balanced, caramelized. Specifically, the most caramelized pieces, with raisins included were addictive. You can also taste liquor-like bitterness. As I said, the portion is immense, I would say that even 6 persons could comfortably share it. They kindly prepared the remaining to take away. In summary, a wonderful first experience with the local cuisine that I will remember with love. The price is average for this kind of dishes, but justified if you consider the sizes and the homemade factor. One of the best restaurant in Vienna. Truly amazing food. Highly recommended. Always come here with friends who visit this lovely city.

However, we have a bad experience today. I am used to make a reservation online and always get confirmed or declined quickly. Yesterday, I did the same thing as before but never get a reply even overnight. Hence I cancelled the old request and tried to book again. Luckily it got confirmed and accepted within a short time. When we finally arrive the restaurant, the lady said no table has been reserved for us and insisted I already cancelled the booking. This is not supposed to happen. Here is the full timeline: I book no answer no way but cancel book again get confirmed by both SMS and email notification no table in the end. Definitely it's not a result that the restaurant and guests want to see. There must be a room for improvement.

Today's lesson for me is just losing a great meal and wonderful time with friends as I have lived here for years. However for those visitors like my friends, they lose something much bigger as they probably have only one chance to visit this city in their whole life. It's a shame that I failed to catch the opportunity of introducing my favorite Austrian food to them. Hopefully this mistake would not...

So from where to begin?? We found this restaurant from chat gpt after we were looking for a local food to try. It was look good at the google so we went to try it. We arrived there today around 18:30. The service was good until one of the waiter throw a comment to me and to my friend that we are "terrorist" while he throw the dessert on the table. We were in shok, we didnt exspect to hear something like this. Immediately we left the table and we went to pay although we didnt touch the dessert. We felt that it could have escalated, we were scared and we just wanted to run away from there. Yes, we are from Israel and we are proud of it. We didnt do something bad to anyone and its not fair and actually scary to get this kind of comment out of nowhere. We were very polite and kind, we didnt speek loudly and ofc we didnt say anything about politics. We only wanted to experience good and local food and enjoy our time here in Vienna and we feel it ruined the whole experience. We really hope you will never face yourself in this situation.
