Kafeneon - Καφενείο — Restaurant in Vienna

I had heard great things about Kafeneon from friends and decided to visit to see if it lived up to the hype—and it absolutely did!

The menu is relatively small, which I find a good sign, as it often means every dish is carefully crafted. Kafeneon serves Greek cuisine with a modern twist, making familiar flavors even more intriguing.

We started with several appetizers: tzatziki (I would have preferred a bit more garlic, but that’s a personal preference), taramosalata, and melitzanosalata—all delicious. We also enjoyed the gigantes (large beans), talagani (grilled cheese), and stuffed artichokes. For the main course, there were vegetarian, seafood, and meat options. I had the goat paired with gigantes, which was incredibly tender and flavorful, with no strong aftertaste. I also tasted the octopus with fava, which was perfectly cooked. My only small critique was that most appetizers came with parsley, which isn’t to my taste, but that’s subjective.

We paired the meal with the house wine from the island of Zante, a delightful and smooth choice.

The service was outstanding—friendly and attentive. Kafeneon stands out as a fantastic spot in Vienna for those seeking authentic Greek gastronomy without the cliché decor of ancient columns and statues. This is a hidden pleasant surprise that is worth a visit. It is located in a lateral street, and I just found by chance, but did not regret to have stopped. It was a pleasant experience. The food is wonderful and with a cozy ambiance. We did not have a reservation (the place is small, so reservation is a must) but the owner did her best to accommodate us and also took time to gave us a lot of tips and suggestions, although the place was full and all staff busy. Ein absoluter griechischer Geheimtipp! Unweit des Yppenmarktes in Ottakring, ist dieses kleine aber feine griechische Restaurant zu finden. Einer Empfehlung folgend, musste ich es besuchen. Ich konnte mir aussuchen draußen gehsteigseitig, zu sitzen oder eher drinnen, wir entschieden uns für den gemütlichen Gastraum. Der Gastraum war gleich einladend! Die robusten Echtholztische und die gemütlichen Sessel laden zum Verweilen ein. Mein Blick erhaschte sofort den tollen Boden, erinnerte mich sofort an die alte griechische Baukultur. Die tolle, unbehandelte Decke, im Einklang mit dem Boden könnten wohl Bände erzählen. Aber jetzt einmal schnell die Speisekarte angesehen, dass Speiseangebot ist übersichtlich, die Weinkarte grandios und verlockend. Ich konnte mich, wie sooft, nicht entscheiden, so brachte mir der aufmerksame Kellner einfach von überall ein bisschen! Genial, aber es war ehrlich fast zu viel. Die Portionen sind von klein weit entfernt, jede für sich eine Köstlichkeit. Die sehr geschmackvollen Oliven mit Brot, über die Orangen Vinaigrette und Linsenpüree (schmeckt wie daheim!) mit Oktopus (unglaublicher Geschmack), sowie Ofen-Champions und viel Gemüse. Mein Favorit war, Räucherkäse, Zwetschke, Wallnüsse. Es war wie in einem griechischen Urlaub. Der rote Traubensaft schmeckte wie frisch gemacht.
