Materia Restaurant — Restaurant in Vienna

Our search for an outstanding Italian restaurant finally got us to the best Italian restaurant I’ve been in the past few years. Delicately presented with harmony of taste and colours, we have embraced a truly spectacular culinary journey, sapiently stirred by Chef Stefano; his knowledge of traditional Italian flavors, perfectly matched his daring association and ingenious experimentation. Starting with a true Carbonara sauce served inside an open eggshell, accompanied with a crunchy yet soft and tasty focaccia, alongside with meatballs that envy nothing to how my grandma made them. And that’s the chef’s welcomes… I indulged in the “wild” meat menu, while my partner savored the fish menu, and my daughter was given the second best Pasta al Pomodoro (fresh tomato sauce) - my own recipe for pasta al pomodoro still remains unbeaten. I can only reaffirm that Chef Stefano is up to something remarkable, his love for traditions and his ability to provide equilibrium amongst ingredients that aren’t usually married is a gift that few can claim in Vienna. Interesting food missing the „kick“. Felt cheated by the wine menu.

1. Food: „terra“ and „mare“ menu interesting dishes with fresh ingredients but most were missing the „kick“, the little extra, the Wow factor, the perfect flavor. Order different menus and share to improve the experience.

2. Ambiance: modern and nice, but more elegant music choice could have enhanced the fine dining ambiance.

3. Wine: felt cheated and received weird excuses by waiter and owner.

After ordering a bottle, we realized its available by glass and much cheaper: 7 glasses for the price of 1 bottle. Asking waiter about this, he says „but ordering a bottle is always much more expensive than glass“. Really?

When owner asked about our experience, we also asked him and he says „we opened 1 bottle for another guest, thats why its so cheap by the glass. Normally its much more expensive“. Sounds ridiculous. Because of 1 opened bottle they re-print every wine menu?

They had many options: deduct 1 glass from bill, say the menu has a typo, give 1 glass on the house. Instead chose to give weird excuses.

Food is superb. But this being a relatively new place, they still have to better service. We had about 30 minutes wait between course 4 and 5 and when we mentioned we've been waiting for the pork dish for a long time they were quite surprised we haven't gotten it already... I mean they also gave us the false cutlery. But then it arrived promptly. Also needed to tell them to bring dessert after another 10 minutes wait and then they brought them right away. So I think the problem is only in the service, they need to get a bit more professional. We had 2 bottles of wine for a 6-course meal but were reluctant to order a 3rd one just because they got so slow in the middle of our meals. But the food was amazing so I think we'll try again in...
