Schönbornpark — Attraction in Vienna

Well maintained, lively and lovely park! Really good basketball court and beach volleyball court, and plenty of space for kids to play outside if just the playground. Haven’t tired the café there yet, but it looks very inviting. Drinking water is also available at a spout to refill water bottles. Not a must see if you’re only visiting, but well worth the tram ride it’s out of the way and you’re staying in Vienna for a while. Beschreibung Die Atmosphäre dieses kompakten innerstädtischen Parks wird durch große Bäume und dichte Hecken bestimmt. Hier sind viele Funktionen eines Parks in verschiedenen Gartenräumen untergebracht. Das geschlossene Erscheinungsbild bildet zusammen mit dem angrenzenden Museum für Volkskunde ein interessantes Ensemble.

Die Anlage geht auf ein bekanntes Wiener Gartenpalais zurück: Der als Reichsvizekanzler nach Wien berufene Graf Schönborn erwarb Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts einen Gartengrund. Er beauftragte Lukas von Hildebrandt mit dem Bau eines Palais. 1729 wurde Schönborn als Bischof nach Würzburg berufen und das Palais mit Garten vermietet. 1862 wurde das stark verkleinerte Areal von der Stadt Wien gekauft und als Schönbornpark eröffnet. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde hier ein Bunker errichtet und die Wegestruktur wesentlich verändert. Heute befinden sich im Schönbornpark Spielbereiche und Sitzplätze.
