As I climbed the stairs to the 2nd floor place with my two companions i noticed the staff lolling around the establishment in typical Bangladeshi male fashion, i. e. Leaning on the counter or tables looking bored. I can't blame them for there were none in there at around 12pm. That should have been the first red flag, however, we were tired and very hungry so we decided to ignore that and sat ourselves at a table expecting to spend some nice time and have good food. We asked for a bottle of water first. A warm bottle was put on the table. I asked if there was chilled water. The guy disappeared somewhere and after about 5 minutes reappeared with the message that no, there was no chilled water. Well, is there some ice we could have. The floor captain barked at the newbie server, get ice for sir! He then turned to me, and assured me, you'll get ice sir. Well, that sounded promising though I had my doubts about the safety of the ice but I decided to take my chance for a glass of cool water. Then came the tattered menu wrapped in plastic sheath. Oh well, let's be positive, right? The place claimed to be a Chinese-thai place and I always give these places a wide berth. I don't think it is possible to manage multiple cuisines in one kitchen. My philosophy is, do one thing and do it right. However, Dhaka restaurateurs think otherwise. They don't want to miss on the Dhaka youngsters' ravenous hunger and lack of taste. So you want loitta vorta, they have it. What's that? You also want "thai soup"? Ya, we can do that. Burgers? Yep! Fried chicken? Sure. Even if that means picking out the curry chicken pieces, dip those in a batter and serve with couple of packs of "ketchup", cornflour, red colouring and citric acid. But I digress. As I looked at the menu i found the typical stuff dhaka restaurants offer. The upturned bowl of "fried rice" or the gloppy dish of slices of carrot and papaya drenched in cornflour slurry and posing as chinese mixed vegetable. Sure. But my companions were ravenous so I just closed my eyes and ordered a soup, thai coconut soup with chicken. Sorry sir, we don't have it. Well, how about this or that? No sir, we only have thai soup. How about dumplings? Sorry again. By this time my patience ran out. I said let me pay for the water. I do t want to eat here. If you don't have menu items then why bother to stay open?
