Brasserie Appelmans — Restaurant in Antwerp

In the crowd of touristic restaurants downtown Antwerp this is a nice pearl mainly made for locals. Literally 3 steps away from the magnificent cathedral this restaurant (whose name “Appelmans” is actually the surname of the cathedral’s architect) mixes a modern atmosphere built into an old fashioned building. The food is quite good and also served well in nice plates also good for the eyes. I went for a steak and fries and would have probably expected something slightly more from the fries. Overall quite average. The drinks selection is massive...it is actually a little book. However it is mainly made of cocktails. The most noticeable ones are the ones with absinth which I did not try. The selection of beers in the menu - though - is less than I would have expected given the number of pages of the drink menu. They also organize a quite comprehensive brunch which is so comprehensive to the point of drawing a map for it. The bill is probably on the high side. The friendly and fast staff made the dinner very enjoyable. All in all we spent a very good evening downtown Antwerp. This place is worth trying but not as a must...

first there was a issue with any tap beer due to some technical error of the tap installation so could not get A Bollekke. Ok. not good if you are a brasserie in Antwerp and you can not seerve the most famous beer.

so i ordered the Stoofvlees. it was sooo sweet that is was extreemly unpleasant to eat. Nothing close to the taste of a deep meaty Flemish Stew as it should be. I am from belgium, so i know what good stoofvlees tastes like and should taste like. also the salad was not great at all. on top of that on the table next to me, there was a lady sitting with her son.

So ordered the shrimp croquettes and after it arrived she cut it open and it was stone cold inside. as the tables are so close next to eachother, i overheard hear telling her son, who also felt them inside they are just cold. i think she let it go as she did not dare to tell the serving staff.

i however told the serving staff about it and they basically said this is how it tastes and showed me the bill and i paid.

so as you can see i was not the only 1 having issues with the cooking of...

Food OK. Terrible waiter. I had a table reservation, when we arrived the table wasn't ready. That was ok for me we took place next to that table. 2 minutes later the people from the table which I reserved for a special occasion leave and we move to that table. The waiter comes over, and tells us we have to get back to the first table because this one is " reserved" . I tell him several times that I am the person who reserved this table and he can check this in the computer, he doesnt even listen to me and tells us to pack our stuff and move back to the first tabl . Very annoyed we take our coats and bags and move back to the table. I tell him that this is not OK but he's not even listening. At this point I am thinking about leaving. We decide to ignore him and enjoy our night. 15 minutes later he comes back and orders us to move back to the orginally reserved table. So for the second time we pack our stuff, coats, drinks, apperatives and move them to the table next to us!!! Shameless!! Not coming back...
