I rarely leave reviews for bad service, but this place truly shook me to my core. What should have been a simple dinner turned into a horrendous nightmare.
We arrived without a reservation and were told we could only keep the table for an hour. We waited twenty minutes before anyone approached us. When the waiter, Ahmad, finally arrived, his first words were, “Who seated you here? Was it my colleague?” (For context, there’s no way customers could get a table without being directed by the host at the front.)
After ordering, we waited twenty-five minutes for our food. During service, Ahmad shoved utensils into my face and mocked my family about finishing the meal in time. Before I could even take my first bite, he returned with the bill and card machine in hand, insisting we pay immediately. When I raised the issue of the forty minutes wasted just waiting for our order to be taken and served, he replied that this was “completely normal.” His actions and attitude completely ruined our evening.
When I complained to the host, he blamed us for not “actively seeking staff,” even though three female employees were outside smoking during peak dinner hours, which I witnessed firsthand. Ahmad later denied shoving utensils, defended his behavior, and only offered a forced and insincere apology after we made it clear we did not want free drinks or bread—we simply wanted basic respect. Even when serving complimentary bread and drinks, he unnecessarily pointed out that customers usually pay for the bread, as if we should feel grateful.
For context, we had dined at Mémé Gusta in Ghent the night before—also without a reservation and under the same one-hour limit—and the staff there were professional, courteous, and efficient. Elfde Gebod was the exact opposite.
In the end, Elfde Gebod should honestly rename itself Karen’s Diner, because that is exactly how they treat their customers. The food tasted like it came straight from Hell’s Kitchen, the staff gaslighted us at every turn, and the entire night was a disaster. Please avoid this place at all costs. Antwerp has no shortage of restaurants and bars where you and your loved ones will actually be welcomed instead of insulted. And if anyone—including the owner—suggests giving this place another chance, they must be smoking some very...
Read moreBetter management could get higher stars but with current attitude 3 stars is a fair rating for this restaurant. Here is why:
Food: We tried mussels and beef stew. Mussels are OK, but I wouldn't recommend the stew. I'm positive you can get much better versions elsewhere based on my previous experience.
Service: This is the part where they make you feel uncomfortable. It's clear they try to capitalise on tourists who have no clue about the local etiquette. Everything was OK until the moment of the bill. Then they kind of force you to tip at least 10% and going even higher than that. Our waiter claimed that there was no option other than those. Luckily I live in the Netherlands for many years, so I've been to many places in the region and know how things work with tipping. I'm also capable of understanding Dutch. When I see there's an option to choose a different amount of tip while the waiter was saying only options start from 10% and go up, I got frustrated. I decided not to tip at all. I hope this becomes a lesson for the person in question. If you don't like 5% and try to fool your customers into US style tips that's what you get in return.
Atmosphere: This is the only reason to visit this restaurant. It's interesting to see the decoration inside and spend some time there. Obviously this seems attractive to many tourists and current employees tend to turn this place into a tourist trap. Unfortunately, music played does not match the decoration style and vibe of the place. So, it feels a bit odd although it's my kind of music.
With proper management and attention this place could get much higher rating as it has the potential but underperforms due to points mentioned above.
All in all, if you must go there just stick to basics and be prepared for these kind of tricks. I don't expect them change their attitude anytime soon as they probably have enough customers no...
