Maison Mathis — Restaurant in Hasselt

The location and the ambience are positive, you can sit very nicely and the pleasant lounge music give the Maison Mathis a relaxed character. The selection of drinks is not huge, but perfectly adequate.

However, a successful evening also consists of more. Attentive service and friendly staff should be expected at the prices this establishment charges, as well as an above-average quality of the drinks. We had to experience that after 20-25 minutes of waiting, not even a waiter came by, on the contrary: I had to go in myself to get someone's attention. Not a good start. While my friend's Aperol Spritz wasn't world class, but at least okay, I wondered if I couldn't have made my Whisky Sour better at home. Not only was the glass not even three-quarters full. I was much more bothered by the fact that they hadn't even tried to dress the drink nicely. Three ice cubes, that was it. As quickly as we finished our drinks to go drink somewhere else, we ordered the bill to leave. I recommend the good bars at Dusartplein, where not only the service is fast and friendly, but where you also get something for your money.

Maison Mathis has me torn. While it offers a very aesthetically pleasing and an overall quite comfortable environment, our experience when it came to the ordering and delivering of food to our table was less than optimal. The staff, though mostly friendly, seemed to be quite disorganized, leading to several instances of them simply forgetting or being unable to provide us with drinks or sides we ordered, and times where we had to wait up to a total of 45 minutes to receive a single dish.

While I fully understand the possibility of this happening on what seemed to be quite a busy night, I am a little less forgiving when my partner had to remind staff they had forgotten her side dish three times in a row, and despite that never delivered it to our table during our 4 hour visit. A saving grace was the amount and quality of the food, which was great in taste and presentation, though I would also say this is to be expected for the given price range.

Overall, the food and environment are great - though the restaurant is on the expensive side - but service was quite lacking. I will return in the future with my eye on a few more menu items I would love to try, and in hope of being able to leave a better review when...

Took all too long and Unprofessional Service: At 12:15 we were assigned a table. Then we sat there and waited. People who came after us already had their food (salads) before our order was taken. That was then 12.33 o'clock. At our request! Instead of an apology from the waiter, the answer came that we should see how full it is. At 12:55 then came an appetizer. At 13.40 o'clock we then asked a lady, who first wanted to put the wrong thing on the table, whether our food was still coming. After inquiring in the kitchen again no apology came, but the answer, we had just had the starter 50 minutes ago (which is also very long) and that would be normal. And our food would come soon and we should see how full it is! Our food did not come then also at 14.05 o'clock. So I looked for someone where I could pay.
