Villa Ostinato — Restaurant in Ostend

It looks like any other terraced house in Oostende which probably explains why my partner never visited even though she has had a place around the corner for over 15 years. But what a find! The decor is stylish and the terrace/garden in the back a real hidden gem. And then there is the food… simply lovely! A limited menu with seasonal produce that tastes great! This has everything to become a regular place to eat/stay during our visits to Belgium.

We went back to Villa Ostinato (18 May) and, this time, we were a little disappointed. The food was still nice but the portions were small (see photos of main dishes attached) and the service was lacking: for starters, they had not registered that one person is a vegetarian even though it has been mentioned in the booking). When we mentioned this they said no problem and offered fish instead 🤔 after ordering, they brought us two scampi(!) as apero snack so we had to point out again that one person is vegetarian and also that the other person has a crustaceans allergy (they had not checked any allergies) after our starter, we sat for over 30 minutes without any drinks

Het waw-gevoel van het prachtige herenhuis staat in schril contrast met de onvriendelijkheid van de eigenares en het personeel. Wij zijn Oostendenaars en wonen ook in Oostende. Mijn schoonbroer en schoonzus kwamen voor eindejaar naar Oostende en boekten in Villa Ostinato een kamer voor 2 nachten. Daar het restaurant goeie reviews krijgt dachten we van er samen te eten. Wij bekeken allen het menu online en boekten ook online een tafel voor 4. Binnenkomen in het prachtige pand is echt wel waw. De vriendelijkheid is echter iets anders. Het onthaal was zeker niet warm. Afstandelijk, het menu werd opgesomd, de kaarten aangereikt. Het menu kwam helemaal niet overeen met wat online stond. Op zich kan dit, we hebben daar ook geen probleem mee, maar meld dat dan aan je klanten wanneer je het menu aanreikt. De hazenrug bleek fazant te zijn. De garnituren bij de coquilles en de lotte waren ook anders dan vermeld op het online menu. En toen kwam de dessertkeuze. Op het online menu stond sabayon vermeld. Dit bleek aangepast te zijn naar chocolademousse. Iets wat we allemaal eigenlijk niet lusten als dessert. Bij de vraag of de sabayon kon geserveerd worden was het antwoord heel kort en bondig van de serveerster: nee, dat kan niet. Dan maar de manager erbij geroepen. Door de onvriendelijke, defensieve toon van de blonde manager geraakten we eigenlijk in een discussie. De toon, de antwoorden, de verwijtende opmerkingen waren echt allesbehalve. De rest van de avond bleek de bediening dan met een lang gezicht te zijn. Bij het afrekenen volgde een discussie wat helemaal niet past op een niveau van zo een restaurant. De blonde manager beschuldigt de klanten. Defensief, star, totaal niet open voor een deftige conversatie. Wij gaan veel eten in Oostende. Mathilda, Ocean, Le Bassin, Cromwell, Vistrapje, Albert zijn onze vaste stekken. Nog nooit hebben wij zoiets meegemaakt in deze restaurants. Werkelijk, nog nooit.

Update: De manager schrijft in haar antwoord over een 'eis' van een korting. Het ging ons niet om 10 of 12 euro korting. We hebben dat ook duidelijk gemeld. Het ging ons om de onvriendelijke antwoorden. De stugge en defensieve houding van het team. U hebt het duidelijk niet begrepen waarover het ging? Wij hebben de volledige prijs betaald.En het gaat ons niet om het bedrag, laat dit nog eens...
