I will confess that my pre arrival dining homework never brought Maxie’s Restaurant and Lounge, towards the top of the list. However, one party of guests at my resort, as well as some locals, were strongly suggesting that I visit this place. So after a dip in the pool and a relaxing shower, I hailed a cab to take me to Maxie’s.
When I arrived to the small, dimly lit, cozy restaurant, the host refused to give me a table. Why? Because I was dining solo and therefore needed to sit at the bar. I pointed out that for one, I preferred to have my feet on the ground while eating. Secondly, there were only 3 tables occupied, the place was kinda empty and several 2-seat tables were available. The host replied that they were reserved (I saw no such signs). So, I told him that I would have to leave and would like to say bye to the manager before I did so. By that time, I had garnered some attention and the manager was standing by my side. I was given a table of my choice within minutes.
I ordered a fresh fish filet that was grilled, with a side of French fries (just had the taste for it) and their national dish, the rice and beans. The fish was bland, but tender and soft, highlighting its freshness. The fries were good and the rice and beans did not come out dry (finally, some good stuff). The eatery also had some nice artwork in its spaces. However, my complete dining experience was overshadowed by the hostile welcome I received in the beginning. Unfortunately, it left a bad taste in my mouth, even after I left...
Read moreWe went to Maxie’s last night The ambiance in there is great! Food for me was very mid and was t worth the price in my opinion 🫤. We ordered the seafood platter and shared it. Calamari didn’t taste as great as what we had at Anglers the night before, but that’s ok. For what we got vs what we paid I definitely felt like it wasn’t worth it at all. My biggest disappointment was their drinks. My husband’s birthday was last night so we were there for his birthday. We were a group of 18 so the 18% gratuity was automatically put on each bill. He ordered an old fashioned from the drink menu and the waitress asked us which whiskey he wanted in it. What she DID NOT tell us was that they charge $22 USD per drink just to add the Makers Mark whiskey (which isn’t top shelf at all). So the price for the old fashioned was already on the menu at $18 so that’s what we thought we were ordering. It’s definitely a place I won’t return to when we come back. All we ordered was a Mojito, 2 Old Fashioned, the seafood platter (which didn’t come with any sides and requires you to add a minimum of 4 proteins which they charged different prices for each), we had to add sides so we got the plantains and coconut rice and beans. Bill was $215.98 USD. So it’s definitely a one and done for me. Won’t ever go back. 3 stars on the food because it was t worth the price, 1 star on service because of the drinks and not disclosing that we would be charged an extra $44 to add the whisky and 5 stars for...
Read moreMaxie's Restaurant & Lounge, nestled at the corner of Angel Coral and Buccaneer St in San Pedro, Belize, presents itself as a vibrant seafood-steakhouse that promises an enjoyable dining experience. Upon arrival, the upbeat atmosphere hits you immediately, though it can get rather loud, making conversation a bit of a challenge. The price range is moderate, which is fitting for the quality of food and service.
The menu boasts a variety of dishes, but the standout is undoubtedly the signature Coconut Lobster, a delightful fusion of tropical flavors that’s hard to resist. The Garlic Edamame served as an appetizer was a tasty start, bursting with flavor. However, not all dishes hit the mark. The Coconut Shrimp was flavorful, but the Steak Tacos left something to be desired, coming off a bit chewy.
The Beef Tenderloin, on the other hand, was a triumph, showcasing a great sear and rich flavor that made it a highlight of the night. Unfortunately, the New York Strip was a disappointment; while it had a good taste, it was riddled with gristle and resembled more of a Salisbury steak than a premium cut. It was frustrating, as the flavor was promising, but the texture made it nearly inedible.
Service at Maxie's was commendable, with attentive staff managing numerous tables without compromising on quality. The unique upstairs bar and VIP room add an interesting touch to the overall experience. While Maxie's has its highlights, it may need to refine some of its offerings to...
