Review of Confeitaria Colombo in Rio de Janeiro:
Confeitaria Colombo is undeniably a landmark with a rich history, and its stunning architecture and old-world charm make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Rio's cultural heritage. However, my recent experience left me feeling that it has become more of a tourist trap than a culinary destination.
Upon entering, we were greeted by the hostess and asked to wait for a table. Once seated, we were immediately approached for a photo, which felt more like a sales pitch than a warm welcome. The photo, available for purchase on the way out, seemed like an unnecessary add-on to an already overpriced experience.
We ordered two orange juices and a Sprite, which arrived quickly. Unfortunately, the orange juice was disappointingly watered down, lacking the freshness you'd expect from a place of this caliber. For food, we opted for two club sandwiches and an egg omelet. The club sandwiches were overwhelmingly heavy on the bread, with just two paper-thin slices of turkey meat, making them feel unbalanced and underwhelming. The omelet was decent but nothing memorable.
Desserts were a mixed bag. The walnut tart was acceptable, though not exceptional, while the profiteroles were downright disappointing. They lacked flavor and texture, leaving us wishing we had skipped dessert altogether.
While it was fascinating to step into such a historic café, the overall experience fell short. The food was mediocre at best, and the emphasis on upselling detracted from the ambiance. Confeitaria Colombo is worth a visit for its history and beauty, but manage your expectations when it comes to...
Read moreThere is no service at all with higher than average prices. They give you your coffee at the corner and further you have to go with it through the crowd looking for some place to sit and further you can endure attack of the stuff.
I just had very bad experience with the manager Franco. I put my cafe on a free table and went to bring my dessert as I saw that some man brought my cafe, poured it out of the cap and started shouting at me that I cannot sit at this table. He didn't present himself and seemed not professional at all with his attack, so my first impression was that some angry guest for some reason brought my drink around and shouts at me. I So I had to ask whether he bought this table in possession so that he's entitled to restrict anyone to sit there. That was how I learnt that he is manager.
I had to put efforts to calm him down and tune to the more constructive conversation, asking where I can sit instead. By the way, to the time I finished my breakfast nobody still be sitted on that table, they just put some packets on it. So in the over crowded situation the manager allows some clients just hold empty tables for some clients and allow himself attacking some other clients.
If you are tourist and attracted by this beautiful interior, the best you can do is to take some photos and go yo breakfast just right in on the ground floor of the Gallery. There you will be served 2 times cheaper and way...

My wife and I (she's Brazillian) were very excited to visit this spot, especially after seeing it featured on the Netflix show, Somebody Feed Phil. I can't express our disappointment despite how beautiful the building was.
I watched peopled get sat, eat AND PAY before I could even get a drink delivered. 55 minutes from the time we were sat. Note this was on a Thursday, mid afternoon. Not packed.
The food we ordered, a beirute, was nothing more than a flavorless overcooked piece of meat on a tortilla with some soggy lettuce, a sad tomato and thin slice of cheese. I've had FAR better food from the lowest tier dining establishments of the US. On par with airline food.
We figured the brigadeiro cake we got to share was going to be good but it was dry and and so overly sweet and thick that we couldn't finish between the two of us nor did we want to try.
Also of note all food was delivered to my wife. Not to me. The coffee, drink, cake and food were all delivered to her with their back to me. I wasn't acknowledged until we left when one of the servers gave me a thumbs up which seemed almost as a joke at that point.
This place exists on the laurels of its history and architecture. The food and service were some of the worst things I've experienced in dining. I've gotten better food and service from strung out drug addicts at...
