To start with a positive note, some of the staff spoke English and switched languages when they noticed I was struggling with Portuguese, which I appreciated. One of the two baristas was kind and the decoration in the cafe was nice.
Unfortunately, the rest of my experience at Rio Coffee House was disappointing on multiple levels.
The coffee tasted bad, and the steamed milk had a burnt taste that made it nearly undrinkable. The food wasn’t much better—poor in flavor and carelessly prepared, with a short black hair in one of the sandwiches we ordered.
Service was equally frustrating. They messed up part of our order and then angrily insisted the correct items would cost more (we would have been happy to pay), which left us feeling defeated. My drink never even made it to us; after 10-15 minutes, we inquired and discovered it had been left at the counter. When we asked about it, they blamed us even though they told us they’d bring it out and brought everything else out and offered the cold drink, only reluctantly remaking it after we insisted. Even then, it tasted bad, and I was made to stand awkwardly while waiting for it.
Other issues included very limited seating and insects near the seating, which made it an uncomfortable spot to sit and enjoy anything.
Overall, this was not the welcoming, high-quality café experience I hoped for. I’ve had a lot of nice coffee during my trip to Rio and, given the many alternatives, I wouldn’t...

Run by a family with generations of expertise in the coffee business, the shop offers more than just quality brews to enjoy in-house or to go. They also sell coffee beans sourced from various regions across Brazil, each with its own unique flavor profile and story.
During our visit, the owner generously took the time to share fascinating insights into the history of coffee in Brazil, the distinct qualities and tastes of beans from different areas, and the art and science behind brewing the perfect cup. We came in for a simple coffee and left with a newfound appreciation and knowledge of Brazilian coffee...
Read moreIncredible local specialty coffee place!! I absolutely loved the oat cappuccino - it was definitely different than the European ones😅. I also very much enjoyed the guava cake, though it was a bit dry.. However, I am fascinated by their concept - everything is locally made - from getting the coffee beans to roasting them at this very place. The only minus I would say is that they have limited seat spots. Regardless, we had a very good time and would definitely come back! Thank you for the warm welcome and kindness (the staff also...
