After recently reviewing another Indian restaurant, this was recommended to me. It is not in an area I usually associate with eating, so we all hopped into a Tuk-tuk and headed down Street 110 and continued to Street 114. Not was our Tuk-tuk driver the slowest driver ever, he also did not knew how to use his map app. It is actually not hard to find if you can actually use a map…
Anyway, we got there eventually. Like many Indian restaurants in this city, the interior is nothing to talk about. They alos played this really annoying spa music; I almost fell into a coma waiting for my food.
The waitress seemed a little unfriendly at first, but she certainly thawed as the meal progressed. Very good service, but we still don’t know where she is from; she was not Khmer or Indian, I think (and I forgot to ask. Might have to go back for that alone).
We ordered Medhu Vada ($3.50) as a starter. This is a black lentil batter deep-fried and looks a little like a doughnut. Originally from South India, this is not something I see very often here; I think the last time I ate this was as a kid in Kenya. The Vadas came out piping hot and were very good, as were the coconut chutneys that came with it.
For the main courses, we ordered Chicken Korma ($7.00), Aloo Mutter (peas and potatoes in tomato gravy at $5.00), Sambar Rice ($3.50), a couple of chapattis ($1.00) and a couple of rotis (1.50). Drinks were sweet Lassi ($2.50) and lime soda ($2.50). We ended up ordering two more chapattis and a garlic naan ($3.50).
The restaurant had a few tables occupied. All local Indians except us, surely a good sign. The food came out fast enough and, after a intitial hiccup with the waitress not really knowing the menu, service turned out to be very good. All dishes were very hot. We had asked for “not spicy” when asked, but it was still too spicy for the girlfriend and her kids. But as mentioned before, their tolerance for spicy is pretty much zero. I could have done with a little bit more of a kick.
The chicken Khorma was outstanding. Very tender meat and with the use of lots of quality spices. I would certainly order that again. The Aloo Mutter was also very good; like the chicken the spices were plentiful and well balanced. The girlfriend and kids were a little taken aback with the rice at first as it is quite a wet rice mixed with dal. However, once they tried it, it was declared delicious and I would agree. They pretty much licked their plates clean! Oh, we also got pappadums halfway through the meal; I guess they had forgotten to give them to us as an appetizer.
The lassis were pretty good as well. All in all, an excellent restaurant with pretty reasonable prices. The only thing I did not quite like all that much was the garlic naan. It wasn’t the soft, squishy kind but rather the hard, brittle kind. Lots and lots of garlic though, I might have to forgo tonight’s cinema visit. I did finish with a Masala tea ($2.50). Not bad, but the cup could have been a...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Annapoorna Indian Restaurant in Phnom Penh, and it was an absolute delight! The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and inviting, and the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was simply delicious – each dish was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection.
We tried a variety of meals, including their Veg Meals, Chicken Meals, and Fish Meals, and each one was a standout. The Sambar Rice, Coconut Rice, and Tandoori Chicken were particularly memorable and highly recommended! They truly capture the essence of authentic Indian cuisine with a perfect blend of spices.
What’s even better is that they offer delivery to hotels, which is very convenient. Whether you’re dining in or ordering out, Annapoorna offers an exceptional culinary experience. Highly recommended for anyone craving tasty, high-quality Indian food...
Read moreAttended a group dinner here with 14 people. What followed was a complete failure in hospitality, communication, and preparation.
Portion sizes were insultingly small—our “half chicken” was three sad scraps. Critical dishes like prawn curry and mixed platters were either forgotten or declared out of stock mid-meal, without notice. The restaurant ran out of beer and eventually ran out of food, despite our pre-booked reservation.
To add insult, we watched as a large Foodpanda order was prepared and sent out while we sat waiting. One guest left hungry. The rest of us had to order delivery from another Indian restaurant (Namaste) to the table.
If you’re planning a group dinner, avoid this place at all costs. A masterclass in how...
