I don't usually take photographs of food, but I was sure that readers would think I was exaggerating if I didn't provide evidence. I had been here for fish and chips a few years ago, and it was OK. I had been out and really wanted fish and chips for dinner, so went here because I was passing by. The restaurant felt a bit odd when I entered, I was the only customer and the man at the counter didn't seem too enthusiastic about having a customer. It was the same dining experience that I remembered from the last time, little attention to comfort, but this time there were the added negatives of loud pop music playing, flashing, coloured rope lighting and thick plastic stuck to the windows, in a soliltary confinement style of making it impossible to look outside. The halibut and chips took quite a long time to get to the table, but when it did arrive it looked delicious. My first taste of the chips was a pleasant surprise, they tasted like chips. The fish looked good too, thick fluffy batter and they hadn't economised on the portion size. I also loved that they gave me a full container of tartar sauce. When I cut into my fish and took my first bite, it was very oily, a bit tough and very thin - no worries, it could have been cut close to the tail, as sometimes can happen, so I took another bite and got the same thing. I started to check each piece of fish on my plate, lots of batter, but hardly any fish. It looked like the fish had been sliced on a meat slicer, it was so consistently thin and looked around the thickness of regular sandwich meat, around 2 mil thick. I ate a few more chips, but I couldn't eat any more than the two bites of greasy batter. I thought this might have been an anomoly, so I asked my husband how his fish was on his fish sandwich. It only slightly thicker. The man at the counter never came to ask if we were satisfied with the meal so when we went to pay, I told him about the fish - he looked unphased and confirmed it was what they normally serve: 4 oz of fish. It may have been 4 0z incuding the batter, but that is still far less fish than every other fish and chips I have ever been served. It was so thin it looked like a thick sheet of paper, not enough fish to know that there was fish present inside the batter. I asked for a refund or discount, the man said he wasn't allowed. This explains why the 'restaurant' was so empty at...
Read moreMy husband was born in England, and we haven't found many places that come close to the real thing back home. We normally order from a longtime Ajax place, but they were closed (Sunday). It's Father's Day, and my husband really wanted fish & chips.
We took a chance on Captain William's after a lady walking by suggested it. I understand it's under new ownership, but we had never been here.
The restaurant interior is very large, with a large number of tables (about 20) and VERY clean. There were about 3 people that came in while we waited to order as well.
We ordered 4 fish (cod) and 2 chips after confirming this would be enough for 3 adults. I ordered coleslaw and an individual gravy, and requested the fries be well done.
We will be dreaming about how amazing our meal was. The pricing and value for our food was very reasonable. Our daughter was working tonight, and there is even enough for a snack tomorrow for her.
HUGE pieces of fish, perfectly cooked thick fries, the most delicious house-made tartar sauce, fresh tangy coleslaw, and thick gravy.
The owners were very lovely and friendly, and we waited about 15 minutes to have our food cooked fresh. Everything was piping hot, and well-packed.
With the price of food going up, but portions and quality going way down, it is incredible to find such a wonderful place to order from.
We will absolutely recommend your business to our co-workers and neighbours!
I was sure to call to say thank you for everything, and that we would definitely be ordering again. Please don't...
Read moreMy wife and I visited in late July 2024. This was our first time having fish and chips. The place was recently taken over by new people, its new name is Neels fish and chips. The place needs a face-lift for sure, its dated. We were greeted by a soft spoken young man who's name is Nirmal his service was great! The food was on point, 5 stars for the food! The fries were well-done, just the way we like it! The fish was battered enough but not overly battered, neither was it oily. The owner of the place needs to step up their game big time, I cannot blame any of the workers but in the entire place there was not a single bottle opener! causing me to not get my Coca-Cola in the glass bottle. I ordered the Coke in the glass bottle then after a few minutes the server came back and placed a coke in the tin can on our table and said "we dont have an opener". I did not like that he assumed that we would have settled for the can instead of the glass bottle coke, in this situation I would have apologized to the customer first and then proceed to explain that we don't have a bottle opener at this time and then ASK them if they would like to choose something else (I would never assume this is what they want). We quietly settled for the can coke instead, its not a big deal but its definitely a learning opportunity for the person serving us. I will recommend and will visit again, hopefully they do a face-lift and get a bottle opener. Keep up the good work guys and you'll see...
