Umi Sushi — Restaurant in Ajax

I’ve been going to this location for over a year now however I’ve decided to add a review since they’ve newly renovated their establishment. Gone are the old remnants of a prior fish n’ chip joint that Umi Sushi took over and in its place is a beautifully designed and decorated restaurant.

A decorated restaurant is only as good as its food and its service and here is where Umi Sushi excels. Their sushi is delicious and full of flavour, as well as a visual treat. I recommend trying the house special roll and I won’t say any more than that.

Since the renovation, Umi has gone All-You-Can-Eat for a modest price and the quality does not suffer. You can also go all in All-You-Can-Drink for an extra cost but I wasn’t that daring.

However, while the food and service are excellent, the dining experience is not as immersive due to the bright lighting and the weird selection of a Top 40 music radio station for ambiance. Something softer in both departments would go a long way.

Also noted are the construction/cleaning supplies in the hallway leading to the bathroom. Perhaps these are leftover from the renovation but cleaning this up and putting your focus towards renovating the bathrooms would elevate this restaurant to the next level.

Lastly the menus need a look over as I found a few spelling mistakes. Attention to detail is important if you’re making sushi.

Stopped in for lunch on my way to Montreal from Toronto and I was a bit perplexed by how we were received. This was 2 days before Christmas which is usually a happy time. We walked in and the restaurant was empty. A lady sitting at the front was on the phone and didn’t acknowledge our presence. We stood there for 1 minute. I made eye contact with a cook who also did not say hello or smile! We decided to give them more time and went to the bathroom. Upon leaving the bathroom the lady who was on the phone was done and stood there nearly blocking our exit and said “May I help you” which I though was odd and I replied “ we’d like to have lunch” . There were at least 5 people working not a single customer. The attitude of the server was cold and borderline rude. We ordered our food, ate and left. The sushi rolls were good, we eat a lot of sushi, but the service was horrendous. I actually can’t believe we were treated that way in a business that provides hospitality. If I lived in Ajax I might order delivery from there but I would never have a sit down dining experience there again. Didn’t feel valued...

This place seemed like they were frustrated taking business for dine in. Made sitting very uncomfortable, no kindness. Looks like a family running their business and a child roaming around like it’s their home and didn’t want a customer to sit inside and eat. Unwelcoming experience made it horrible. Sushi didn’t even taste good. When asked for a cup of water they said they can’t give water that cup of tap water is $1!!!

I have never seen somewhere this cheap over water.

Will not come again and be treated like I did something wrong for dining in. I guess they only want take out business with the attitude they show.

I didn’t say anything to them but will express my experience here. I did let them know about water which my daughter really wanted because she accidentally ate ginger and found spicy.

Very unfortunate experience. Will not recommend to anyone I know.
