Full disclosure: Joey's Only is my favorite restaurant. So this review may be a little biased!
For many years, Joey's in High River has been my very favorite.
The fish is incredibly crispy, flaky, and delicious! I'm not a fan of fries, but Joey's fries are seasoned super nicely with some sort of seasoning salt(?). They're also a lovely texture! Not too dry, not soggy, just perfect! Perfect to sprinkle with a little salt and vinegar! The coleslaw can be a bit hit or miss. I'm a coleslaw fan, and when Joey's hits, it's the second best (the first being from another chain). Sometimes the coleslaw can be lacking in dressing or flavor. But even then, I prefer it to some others out there. The staff have been amazing for years! There were a few that weren't up to the normal Joey's standard (in my opinion), but that was nearing 8 years ago! For the last several years, the waitresses have been cheerful, polite, and quick. And the chef clearly loves his work! It shows in every piece of fish. And if you don't care for fish, Joey's has a fair few other delicious dishes to delight your appetite!
The only reason I'm giving a 4 star (I wanted to do 4.5) is because of the mud pie.
Until recently, Joey's had the very BEST dessert from any restaurant I've been to. The mud pie was a creamy, chocolatey, oreo-crusted heaven on a plate! And the portion sizes were generous! Great for sharing OR going in solo as a nice treat.
But for some reason, mud pie was discontinued?!
I LOVE Joey's and if they bring back the mud pie, I will change my review to a full 5 stars. But until then, my fish feels disappointingly unfinished without a mud pie at the end!
EDIT: The mud pie was brought back. I have added a picture. However, they've changed it into a "deep fried mud pie" rather than the original.
This deep fried version is... I have mixed feelings. The presentation is lovely! And the first few bites are great! But the outside chocolatey coating is SO SWEET, holy cow. I'm not one to shy away from sweets, but the new mud pie can be a little sickening after a while...
I regrettably have to say that the original was better. The crust of the original was far less sweet. Something like a chocolate biscuit, where as this seems a bit like chocolate rice cereal on the outside.
I think desserts should follow the KISS principle "Keep It Simple, Stupid" In the case of the mud pie,...
Read moreWell we decided to go there for my moms birthday dinner on January 12th 2022 we got there around 7pm. Dinner was well over cooked to the point there wasn’t even shrimp in my breaded shrimp I have worked in multiple kitchens and have never seen such horrible food be served to customers. The only thing edible was the French fries which were still undercooked. Fries take longer to cook in the fryer than shrimp so plz explain to me how you undercook fries and over cook the shrimp. Plz teach your cooks how to cook food properly. And the server that night decided to start cleaning with heavy chemicals while we were trying to eat I don’t mind the smell of cleaners but not while I’m trying to eat. Never again will we visit this Joeys if I could give half a star I would. In this photo you can clearly see the shrimp is brown shrimp should...
Read moreJoey's Seafood is a blessing for seafood for flavor! I ordered the fish haddock sandwich with a bowl of lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was the best bowl of bisque I ever had, full of flavor from the seas and the lobster taste was part of the deep flavors. The haddock sandwich was overhanging the bun and breaded perfectly leaving the fish moist and full of flavor with a excellent tarter sauce added for more flavor. Next to the highway for easy off and on, leaving this place as the best seafood restaurant ever in my book... Move over New England, there's a new kid on the block for everyone to enjoy. I will be back again to try other items...
